Default Because I need more GM parts...C6 Z06 Brakes

After doing the LS1 swap on my 944, it was time to start upgrading various other parts to handle the extra power and track duty. The car is strictly a track toy and I hope to start racing in the NASA ST series soon enough.

I had the stock 951 brakes on there and i wanted something a bit bigger. The big reds are an obvious option, but still fairly expensive in my book (1500-2000 after its all said and done). I wanted to see if there was something more affordable or perhaps better in the same price range. My other issue was consumables(rotors/pads), they are fairly pricey for porsche cars. The one thing I loved about my old c5 z06 was the 40 dollars rotors and affordable pads.

After some research I found out that the guys running the 996 gt3 brakes are using the cayenne rotors and they're only 100 bucks shipped from amazon(i found that a nice price for a 350mm rotor). Onto the calipers, the 996 gt3 units are not cheap and generally hard to come by. A 6 piston monobloc alternative though is the C6 Z06 caliper manufacture by PBR. You can find them for about 600-700 bucks as take offs. I haven't bugged junkyards though(it could be cheaper). I bought a test caliper off ebay for 75 dollars, someone had listed it not knowing what it was (labelled as a 3 piston caliper ).

I told Bruce (95ONE) about my idea, and after some prodding, convinced him to help. Bruce is an amazing fabricator and I knew his wealth of knowledge would come in handy. We mocked up the rotor/caliper setup and took alot of measurements. I then spent a saturday night modelling an adapter in ProE using our "precise" measurements.

This weekend Bruce and I were able to cut out an adapter and to our surprise the wholes lined up quite well. Today was the moment of truth, the test fit. It all lined up pretty well, we need to make some adjustments, but as a first run prototype we were both extremely happy.

Here are some pictures from today, I will keep this thread updated as I finish up the adapter and give it a shot at the next track day.

Setup: 86 944 with 87+ hubs running 18x10 twists up front

Interesting. What's the plan for the rear?

Right now I'm going to move the 951 front calipers to the rear and see how that goes. It seems to be a common move with people who run bigger brakes up front. I have a manual proportioning valve as well so I can play around a bit.

Very cool! I wouldn't mind having a pair on my C5 or 951. The 6 little pads per caliper is a little weird, but damn if they don't almost put you through the windshield.

LOL, "amazing fabricator." I think you learned if I had my head screwed on, I'd lose it. But thanks. And YEAH, I forgot to compliment you on getting those holes just right. They were pretty much dead on.

The ,"fuzzy" side of the caliper bracket was from my plasma table not being set up right for the 1/2 aluminum. We had worn out the plasma tips from previous cuts for the thick stuff, and only had the tips for a slightly smaller size. Fuzzy cuts are what you get when you do that.

Phil will be CNCing the piece when the measurement are in the final approval.

All in all. Good job Phill. I tried to talk him out of it, but like me, when someone says don't.. I feel like I HAVE to do it..

Default Shouldn't the cuffs and collar match?

Matching on all four corners would be very cool.

Ya i have no idea how those bolts were so dead on.

968Gene: I may try eventually, apparently I may be able to get a free set of front/rear calipers from my buddy who just did a BBK on his Z06.

Excellent!

The Z06 rotors are 12.6in dia. The rotors you're using are 13.7".... I'm not implying at all that your system won't work (I think its brilliant), but did you look for, or is there any particular reason you went with the larger rotor?

price and size. BUT.. they still require a centering hubcentric ring.

Great find guys! That's significantly cheaper than going all Porsche or Racing components. Do you know much about calipers themselves? Monoblock? Steel pistons? Guess so but no problems. It will be interesting to see how much the extra unsprung weight and extra inertia affects the car. Please report back once you've shaken down the new setup. That's a great price for those rotors!!

Damn '89+ Mo30 spindles to hell I say!!

Pft. Corvette brakes. Not a true Porsche.

(Now excuse me while I go remove my tongue from my cheek)
