Is the Turbo water pump necessary?
The pump on my '88 951S race car decided to spring a leak at the last club race...we took it apart & attempted to seal it up but no luck. So...we just removed it & put in a straight hose for the last session and made sure the car ran for 5-10 minutes after the run to let things cool down properly.
Any downside to leaving it out permanently and just letting the car idle for 5+ minutes after each race/session?

Downside is: that It is only getting the water that is sitting there andit is moving only due to g force.
The pump is just feeding from that location there is no pressure b/c it is before the WP.
You are not getting the cooling effect of the pumped water. However K series turbos have been run in manner for years onthe air cooled cars so..It is your call to take the chance.

Call it a fluke, but the factory turbo on my car went south about 3 months after i removed that pump (it was leaking).
Sure, it could be that the turbo was on it's knees anyways after being run for several years, but i am just saying what happened to me.
Anyways, you don't have to go for a brand new Porsche pump, a 1980's Mercedes heater pump is the exact same dimensions, the only difference is the connector end for power (easy swap) and costs much less, i know because i have done it.

Ive been wondering about this too, mine is starting to make a grinding noise. Also Im not running the temp sensor that is right after the turbo, but my pump still runs after the car is shut off? I thought the pump needed the temp signal in order to switch on after the car is shut off.. do I have this all wrong?

yeah temp sensor is needed to shut it off/turn it on w/ coolant temp. I put a new pump on mine a year back- expensive but worth it - mine was grinding - pulled it all apart and recrimped it together- worked about a week then it started leaking.

My turbo water pump was making a little grinding noise maybe 4-5 years ago ... I removed the small black plastic cap on the top of it and put a few drops of lube on there (think I used motor oil actually)... no noises since and it still works great.

I know the seller and it's the best guy to buy parts from on ebay, he has money back guarantee and most of his products are tested. That pump that he is selling came from a 89",. I think he is a member too and I personally recommend him.
