Any downside to leaving it out permanently and just letting the car idle for 5+ minutes after each race/session?

What you did is fine to make it through a weekend, but I would fix it. Why do you want to allow the chance of heat soaking the turbo? Any track us will be putting ALOT of heat in through there so the need for cooling is quite high. Sure letting it idle after the session will work in bind, but I don't think it is worth the risk of doing all the time.

BTW.... my turbo S street car also uses a MBZ pump. Mine stated making noise and it got replaced with a MBZ one we had laying around.

There are 3 pumps mercedes used over the years, that is the one i got and fitted just right. Need to modify the electrical connector to fit the stock harness, but that is a 10 minute job.

Why not just get a turbo timer?

Because these aren't Hondas. The factory already gave us a better system that does not require the car to idle for 3 minutes each time you shut it off.

The pump is just feeding from that location there is no pressure b/c it is before the WP.

You are not getting the cooling effect of the pumped water. However K series turbos have been run in manner for years onthe air cooled cars so..It is your call to take the chance.
So you don't think there is enough pulling effect from the pump to flow any coolant at all from there? Seeing that it is comming from the same hole the large Radiator line is coming from. I would think there is decent flow without the electric pump. - honestly not sure here.

I don't think so, b/c it is before the pump. It may be able to siphon a small distance but not as a full loop. So you would end up with stationary water in the line.

I currently have mine (water line) feeding into the back of the head and without the electric pump it doesn't seem to move too much water. These water pumps don't seem to be too great anyway so asking for a pulling effect before the pump is a bit much to ask of them IMO

If you are thinking about it for YOUR car it may be possible to use the rear water passage of your head since you are not using a heater. It may not be as cool of liquid but better than nothing.

I found one of these pumps on eBay...ordered it on the weekend and it arrived on my doorstep Wednesday morning. It doesn't get much better than that - if anyone needs one...here is the seller's store front info:
http://stores.ebay.com/Smith-Motorworks
Great price...great service and extremely fast shipment. I'll definitely use them again.

Best,

Rick

Is the pump engaged by a temp sensor? Does it only come on at a certain temperature or is it supposed to come on every time the engine is shut off?

Thanks
