Why do these cars make your clothes smell like fuel?
I have owned 3 of these things, and after driving every one of them for a little while, you get out and can smell fuel (or exhaust) on your clothes.
Has anyone else experienced this?
It's the only thing that keeps me from driving my 951 with a shirt and tie on.

hahahhahaha same here. i kinda never noticed it until the gf was like you smell like gas. then i make everything else smell like gas i like it. but i dont mind. I think its because your prob dont have a cat and you have chips which makes your car run rich.

I have only had the problem with Turbo's. When I had an NA many years ago or if I drive my dad's NA I don't smell like exhaust afterwards. However every turbo I have driven I get the exhaust smell. I have replaced my hatch seal, shifter foam, and checked numerous other areas to try and stop this. Needless to say I am still trying to find a cure.

Huh to my knowledge I don't smell like anything after driving my car...
At least, whenever my g/f says "you always smell so good" maybe she was referring to gas (w/o knowing it) and not my inherent wonderfully exotic aroma...

I don't have the problem. I wear a shirt and tie and smell normal - don't know if thats a good thing. I just bought a 968 hatch and am putting it on this weekend so I am worried the problem could start, however.

With this car, if the windows are down it is fine. Windows up will make you stink.
Like Colin said, never had this issue with my NA cars.
I don't know if it has anything to do with the chips, as admittedly the car was running very rich before (with the APE stuff) but I am sure since I have installed John's controls- the mixture is closer to where it should be.
Plus, my last 951 was tuned by special tool-- it still made you smell like fuel-- so I am sure that was the closest to 'perfect' the mixture can get. . .

none of mine have done that, but my fiance's car did that - 924s- when we had it- turns out there is a drain in the gas cap area that drains into the sunroof drain w/ a T on the ps. Cleaned out the drain real good- and got the two gallons of water out of the quarter panel !! and it was fine after that. I guess the over flow gas was fuming out up near the sunroof or something since it couldnt drain.

Both of my 951's never did this. The cause is probably bad rear hatch seals. Notice how much exhaust comes in when the hatch isn't completly closed? It could also be leaky exhaust at the downpipe and on the cat bypass pipe.
Try some double stick tape around the hatch seal and make sure that it's sealed completely. Drive around and see if that stops the smell. If yes, replace that seal. If no, something else is leaking.
Good Luck,
George

The hatch glass was just resealed- and the rubber seal looks new-- I will maybe take george's advice with the stick tape.
Dan- can you give the details of exactly what you did and how you did it? I am going to try that as well.
Thanks for the tips, everyone.
