If you look at your gas cap you will see a little black rubber drain hole right near the edge of the fender. That is the beginning of it. The rubber piece connects to the clear plastic hose that goes down behind the fender. That hose T's with the line coming down from the sunroof. The hose does not look robust enough to be a gas tube but it doesn't move much of it.
I should have taken pictures when I did mine.
I did that this weekend. It took me like 15 minutes. the "T" was pretty easy to locate and take apart and clean.

Mine was very easy to get to-- it is right behind the carpet. Maybe they changed it on later cars. Anyways, mine was clear-- no blockage.

the replies seem to be for a raw gas smell and an exhaust smell.

many cars smell like exhaust.

drivers THINK they 'reseal' the hatch by replacing the gasket...........but they missed the point.

the seal is fine.

it's the hatch that is bad.

IF YOUR HATCH HAS BEEN PUSHED OUT BY 20 YEARS OF FORCE FROM THE REAR LIFTS, IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THE SEALS ARE FINE BECAUSE THE HATCH HAS MOVED BACK ENOUGH TO CAUSE A LEAK.

check out

1. the top of the glass by the frame. if there is a space between the glass and the frame at the top, you are probably screwed.

2. if you get into the back hatch and feel the rubber seal when hatch is closed and you feel places most likely in the very rear that the seal is not compressed, you are probably screwed.

it's not the seal,..............it's the hatch.

if you find you need one, sunset is less than $1600 delivered and i got nine for $200 used....but remember.....MANY MANY HATCHES HAVE SEPERATED...so don't buy a used one with the same problem.

my $.02

I have the smell in my car when it's just sitting in the garage. But, when i take it out for a drive, if i have the windows up it smells just fine. However, if the windows are down, I can smell the gasoline, and if i push the car above 3500 rpm and more into boost range the smell gets stronger. Anyone else get this?
100% same as mine. I do notice it more when the gas is below 1/4 full.

I got rid of most of it by addressing the rear hatch seal issue.

Also, mine seems more prominent if the ac is on... ???

It's the hatch.

easy test.

take a piece of paper and cut a half inch strip.

open hatch, put paper in, close hatch.

if you can move the paper freely, there's your problem.

most likely area is by the latches
