nice. how was that downpipe made? is it using the double-layer stock downpipe? if so, how was it converted to square ?

I assume you mean crossover? It's not double-walled, at least not at that end. I first cut off the OEM round flange, and bolted the turbo and crossover onto the car. I then bolted the rectangular flange to the turbine inlet, and tack welded the flange to the crossover. I then took the crossover out, attached it to my bench vice, and spent a lot of time using a propane torch / pliers / vice grips / hammers to work the metal into a rectangular shape. I ended up popping the flange off but leaving the tack weld in place, so I could bend the crossover outlet to shape, test fit flange, repeat, repeat... Once I had it looking right, I took it to a professional to Tig weld it.

BTW, the downpipe bolts right up to the T3 turbine outlet.

ah wow, that is a lot of good work. is there any reason why the turbo has a square inlet instead of a round one?

Thanks. Reason? I have no idea, but it seems to me that all Garrett turbine housings use rectangular intakes. Possibly because some of their turbine housings are divided and some are undivided, and allows them to use similar molds.

So Nize, are you still running the stock AFM? If so, there's probably still a bit of improvement in spool you could squeeze out of that turbo, as if it didn't spool fast enough.

Hey Trav, is that the new Tial turbo that has been mooted for our cars for some time now?

Nope, it's just a GT series with one of Tial's new stainless v-band turbine housings: Link It's pretty sweet state of the art stuff. The housings are significantly lighter (they say ~33%, I've heard on a Gt35r it saves ~10lbs!), and if you notice they have a velocity stack/diffuser shaped inlet and outlet. That helps maximize airflow velocity and improve overall efficiency. I've looked around but have yet to find any results of anyone using these on any type of car yet, though I'm sure they've already been in use on some drag cars or serious track stuff. Technically, they should only work better, make more power, and spool up more quickly, but who knows. I'm giving some serious thought towards using a Tial v-band turbine housing on whatever turbo I decide to go with, however I'm probably going to just go for a typical Garrett T3 4-bolt housing like Ian to keep costs down. Between a v-band housing, ceramic Swain coating, GT or t3/t4r ball bearing turbo and you're out nearly ~$2k! BTW, those housings are apparently ~$300-350 roughly.

You can ditch the bi...I mean the whole door too... Then grind all exessive metal out of the AFM, it can be opened several mms. Dig also out electrical parts, just leave the multipin connector and temperature sensor. BTDT.
Did 348fwhp/508Nm with that & K27/6, heavily modified one.

I did my crossover like that at first then made a new one later to match my headers that I made. I'm making a another new set of headers as we speak I wasn't happy with my first set. I went with oneof vic's 60-1/63 turbos and added a V-band flange for my 3" handmade downpipe. It's a tight squeeze but the 3" cross and downpipe will fit
