Engine is out: #4 rod broke, pan will be off momentarily, then head off - pics to follow later or tonight.

I can vouch for that car running strong every time out. I've watched them run the last few years at Hallett. I seems everytime you look it's on the track. Just think if it was seeing only single duty instead of double duty it may have lasted 6 or 7 years with no bearing change. Thats impressive. Good luck on the build guys.

Let us pray....

Dear Jesus, I have today seen the work of the devil. He has invaded my community and destroyed a piece of mankinds perfection. Please keep these images from my dreams, please do not let them enter my mind while turning in at turn 12 of Road Atlanta, the cork screw of Laguna or this fall the banks of DAYTONA (WOOT!!). Preserve and protect me oh lord, as I have stared into the face of evil and come away disturbed.

Amen

Damn bro, that is ugly. Build another one and keep pieces of that one as paperweights.

Thanks Craig...and Bill, LOL! Yeah it's really been fun. We lost some water at Hallett last year at Octoberfest and found a small opening on the headgasket at #4. Wonder if that steam could have put some pressure on the #4 rod?

For sure:
JAB Mahle 100.5 pistons in spare block
Modified pan again and modified pickup - courtesy of Chris Cervelli previous work
Spare crank - cross or perp drill 2 and 3, micro polish journals
LR crossover
LR crossmemeber
Raceware head studs
Head Refresh with new o-rings
of course all new bearings and gaskets
AFFF fire system
same solid motor mounts
same turbo
install our set of Charlie arms with the rest of the Racers Edge bushings we have.

Maybe:
Carrillo or Pauter rods
3" down pipe
windage tray with scraper

some updated cylinder pics and the head. Looks we had a small piston/valve meet on #4 but the head is going back to LR for a refresh anyway. The mark on #3 was NOT there in Jan when I did the inspection of the bores and replaced the head gasket so we're wondering if the crank forced the piston over in all the happenings when #4 went. HG was in perfect shape so no water entered #4 from a possible HG failure.

It looks like there might, might have been an imperfection or a crack migrating its way through the rod but hard to tell with the pounding it took, ie, dull vs shiny area. Pauter rods going in the new engine. FWIW, the red coating is what Tom C has put on his pistons, still there also, some have asked about it.

Nice documentation! I assume the #4 cylinder wall took a pretty bad beating -- since there's a chunk missing from the side of the piston?

Glad that you neither wrecked nor burned Brett. Those Tom C. pistons look like they were doing really well. That should make a number of listers happy. Good luck with the rebuid.

Thanks, me too. I didn't want to look like Ricky Bobby running from the car The pistons were doing well, very pleased with them, and we're going back with a set from our last run just because I did order two extra sets. I would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them. FWIW, we did use the Arias recommended .0015" clearance(.038mm), which is what the new Mahle pistons are also using; .038mm - .040mm.

#4 bore was trashed pretty good and we're guessing that the momentarily imbalance caused #3 to make some contact but that's just a SWAG.

Just one time I'd like an engine to go in such a way that we would have a definitive reason/chain of events that made it go.
I may be in if you do another set of pistons in the future.

not bad for 3.5 years of track duty - rod and mains, right to left.
