Default Help me diagnose what went wrong w/ my turbo

and, we get my new standard cell phone pic!

I have no idea what could've caused this. does it look like foreign object damage? compressor stall, dead bearings?

I would go with foreign object damage.
I don't see any scoring on the intake throat.
But you can see where several of the fins are bent and chipped as if something bounced around a couple of times then either was vaporized or pulled through.
Some of the damage could be from the little bits of missing fin.
Just my less than two cents worth

I'm guessing it ate something. Question is what, and where is what's left of it now! Keep in mind that those fins turn VERY fast, it doesn't take a bolt to knock chunks out of them. I would venture to guess a small piece of metal, or even big piece of plastic could to this if the turbo was spinning at velocity when the object was introduced. You know come to think of it, cavitation at velocity could be hell too. I suppose if you have enough shaft play and the right combination of full boost and possibly failing BOV it is 'possible' that cavitation could become violent enough to snap off those fin tops. But I lean more toward the foreign object theory.

Dude, you have the worst luck.

Regards,
Russell

Definitely looks like it took in something it shouldnt have. Hose clamp, nut, something to that degree. Shaft play will wear them/eat them up, but it doesnt take chunks out of the turbine.

You have the factory air box, do a fastener inventory.

What did you find in the IC?

I am surprised no one else has mentioned this yet... but...

That compressor wheel may not be the real bad news... think about where that metal off the wheel and what ever it ate went. probably small enough to go through the IC... through the IC pipes... through the intake... into then past a valve... into the combustion chamber... spat out if you are lucky... or wedged against the cylinder wall held in by a ring land scraping the hell out of the bore... rooting valve seats... damaging squish points... possibly bending valves...

Unfortunately this is what I thought too... Better to start with removing your IC and hoping that all missing parts are there.

That IS just an interesting smear of grease or something below the opening, right? I thought that was a crack in the housing for a minute there.

I'm always nervous about throttle plate screws, but they're down stream from the turbo. The only other hardware that I know of is a small bolt in the lower corner of the airbox. I think it couples the box to the AFM. The blow-off vavle is a possibility, if it somehow came apart, a rivet or a washer could have been sucked in. Pull the BOV and make sure it is intact, I think with a light you can see the little flapper.
It does look like FOD but from where? Bruce

NZ, that's the beauty of our IC aux oil storage tank feature, those gooey surfaces trap little junk like this.

Flaking ceramic from the exhaust ports? It seems unlikely that it would do that much damage but just another thought.

Greg, this is not the hotside of the turbo. Definitely something from the Jboot.

I second taking an inventory / checking the bolts inside the air box.

Sorry for your bad luck.

I found a piece of shredded rubber in the intercooler... could that do it?

Also, Old turbo out, break for dinner...
