awesome use of a v8 in a 944 (dont hate me)
#182
Has anybody try or at least has basic messurments on Cayanne V8 to see if it fits in a 944/968 chassis?.....I have seen the engine out, and it is very compact, and well design. about the only think I saw that may need to be changes is the oil pan.
Call me stupid or purist, but if you are going to replace the engine (non Porsche) and spent 18k - 20k, I am sure with alittle more effort and money it could be made to fit. At 340 Bhp it would not be a bad place to start. and if we could find a way to fit the V8 turbo, 600 bhp would be a boost **** turn away. It is conparable to a LS1 on a corvette/GTO at 350 bhp, or a camaro/firebird at 320 bhp.
any thoughs?
Regards,
AL

Yeah, the engine and wiring harness alone, if you can find one, will cost your at least $25K. You can do an LS1 conversion for ~10K.

A Porsche V8 would be nice for sure. But, at least for now, there is still far too much engineering that has to be done to get it into a car. That and the fact that the engine is big $$$.
And while you can do a "bare bones" LS1 conversion for around $10k (and I mean bare bones), the reality is that to a quality job, "done right", it's a lot more than $10k (we just did it).

That is true. but I have seen some wreck cayanne go from a low of 5K and up. Of course this very rare.
I don't think 10k would cover a LS1 conversion. maybe Tony can tell as about that and give as a total for his conversion.
Hey tony?

TonyG,
Sorry I wasn’t clear. I mean if a person does the conversion themselves not by a shop, 10K should be more than enough. If a shop performs the swap, half the cost will go towards labour.
A “bare bones” LS1 is still ~350hp. with a ton of TQ. If they can take an F-body (Camaro/TA) into the low 13sec ¼ mile, imagine what it can do in a 944. All this with a stock LS1, then consider all the bolt-on available for these engines.
Al,
Not all Cayannes are V8TTs or even V8s. The base model is a V6 and majority of them are non turbo V8s. If they sell a wrecked one for $5k, I’m not sure if there is anything left salvaging on that car.

Even if you did all the labor yourself, $10k would be barely enough to do bare-bones job, assuming that you could find a complete engine, wiring harness, and computer for $5k.

I know that not all Cayennes are Turbos or V8, but if you pay attention to places like ebay or other actions, you will find V8 non turbo Cayannes. and some times go really cheap. Just a couple of months ago their was a Cayenne S for sale on ebay. starting bid....$3000 sold for alittle over 8K. still not common, but not bad deal. the chassis was gone but the motor was fine as well as the trans and brakes.
Like Tony said, it maybe more expensive to engineer the parts to make it work, but it shure would be a unique car.

The hydraulic booster system is $1,100 installed, and is now available from Powerbrake Systems in Orange County California. The system is driven off of the LS1 powersteering pump.
The system is a 2000psi assist.
Call them up and tell them you want the same system as the SpeedGallery 944 has.
