Oil Cooler
Anyone know how to figure the area of the stock oil cooler? I am replacing with aftermarket and just trying to decide how large a cooler to get. I know some have used the Mocal and it is on my list but I am also looking at coolers that are more slender and elongated (might be able to place near the bottom of the rad. I am a little concerned about adding a 3rd layer by placing the Mocal in front of the condensor and radiator in Texas.

There are some long slender Mocal's but they are big bucks.
I think Danno has mentioned before of a certain generation RX7 oilcooler that is slender and fits perfectly across the bottom of our radiators

Second gen, I am sure. Setrab makes a load of long slender coolers that can be had cheap. I am not usually cheap but if I could get it along the bottom of the rad, that would be my preference. I wondered about the surface area of the stock unit (cant be much because of how it is turned). In essence is ANY upgrade (to front mount) really an upgrade?

NO, I have removed the stock unit and I dont want anything in its place (the placement of the stock cooler is awful). My logic is that any cooler will be better than the stock cooler provided it can handle the capacity. Can the KISS cooler be used as THE cooler? If so I might be interested.

Matt,
I just purchased the KISS setup, as I've been told that it's more than adequate for anything under 375hp. I'll be running an oil pressure and temp gauge once this setup is installed. Hopefully, the results will be satisfactory.

L x W x H will give you the volume of a box of equivalent size to the oil cooler...nowhere near the number you're looking for.
You would need to measure the depth, width of the cooler and the number of fins on the cooler. Then multiply the depth by the width to get the surface area of one fin...and multiply by the number of fins.
What's wrong with the location of the stock oil cooler anyway?
The stock gauges dont include an oil temp gauge, and the oil pressure gauge is only enough to get a general idea of whats going on. It wont allow you to see small changes in oil pressure.

It is turned sideways, is a mother to get out/in and has problems with seals leaking (I didnt think I would be able to get it back in when the engine went back, the other is what I used to convince my wife I *needed* a new oil cooler).
To the original question, will ANY brand oil cooler do provided it is the right size?

Mochman, what did you do for cooler lines? Did you adapt the Mazda cooler for AN fittings? Let me know as I have TWO second gens and I can snag the cooler off of the non-running one.

The RX-7 oil cooler fits pretty much perfectly in the opening of the passenger side driving light, by the way...

Thanks, I was kind of hoping for a front mount option, just lower on the radiator than where most of the Mocals are mounted.
