Keeping our trusted vendors in business is key to whatever practicality there is for me owning a 928. I tend not to buy fluids from them, but everything else parts-wise comes from our sponsors. Their support is essential. Case in point: Several years ago, Koni packages were arriving with a variety of top nut threads. In the same package, with one side being different thread pitch than the other, different from the nuts that came in the same box. I know that Roger went immediately to Koni to work out the problems, notified all purchasers directly, and offered replacement nuts or replacement shocks. I'm pretty sure that the internet drop-ship "vendors" had no such interest or willingness to step up to help remedy the manufacturer's problem. Most will offer whatever pass-through warranty there is, while at the same time certain manufacturers don't recognize warranty responsibility on parts not sourced through their regular distribution and dealer channels.

So who offers the best Koni shock package? It may not be the cheapest one.

All great points, and I agree that paying a few extra bucks from a reputable sources goes a long way. But when we are talking more than a couple of bucks, then things change.

As far as vendors, the below are some the established and reputable companies I've personally dealt with offering the $155:

As noted, it is certainly a big percentage price difference, when adding everything in.

And those companies are certainly not the average "Internet ******" that has become so commonplace.

Grab 'em while they are on sale....

I would like to thank the customers who purchased my sets of shocks even though they could have purchased them at a lower price from none 928 centric companies who are not even sponsors of this forum..

I believe in supporting our 928 parts suppliers and take every opportunity to purchase from them or recommend them to my customers Worldwide.

Neither TireRack or Shockwave are sponsors of this list and as such do not pay to advertise here. They also do nothing to further the 928 community as such.

Without companies such as 928 Specialists, 928 International, 928 Docs, 928 MotorSports, Precision Autowerks, The classic 9 Leather shop, Garage 928, Project 9 & Jensan Racing our cars would be in a sorry position.

Support the people who support our passion.

Different rides, but I like them both.
@ John, how do you characterize this different ride?

@ Roger, do you still have those shocks on sale at that price?

Obviously, the shocks set to mid-soft allow for a slightly harsher ride than full-soft, but it's not too harsh and it makes the car feel very stable without being too rough at lower speeds.

The Eibachs, since they are a progressive spring, would probably benefit from a more stiff shock setting. The spring allows the wheel to compress the spring easily to a point at which it stiffens. Some people don't like this as it can feel like the car is floating. The KONI buffers that to keep the car from having that bouncy feeling. Then as the spring gets into the meatier and stiffer compression areas (hard cornering and driving), the KONI uses the rebound to minimize the jolting effect from any repeated bumps with the effectively stiffer springs. I like the ride. IMO, it seems to make the Waissach work better(or at least it seems that way to me) and once you get used to the ride and handling, it is a repeatable action.(It'll be that way every time)

RedFlash,

You may need to be a bit patient regarding your query for Roger. He was just recently released from the hospital where he had been 'visiting' for extremely high blood pressure and perhaps other symptoms. I suggest you e-mail directly to 928sRu and Laura, Mercedes, or Zane may be able to help you out sooner.

I've had Koni's on all 6 of the 928's I owned, so obviously liked them! Have a set of NOS waiting to be installed in my BMW 3.0 CS as soon as I get motivated to do that! I had them on a previous 3.0 CS I drive in the late '70's, and really liked them then as well.

Cheers,

It was 5 years ago when Sean put Koni reds and Eibach springs on the car. I thought the ride was good then. For whatever reason, it's even better now. It's like they've mellowed and are now at that sweet spot. (still at factory ride height)

When I bought my car the previous owner Chris had put Eibachs and Bilsteins (with the famed Leguia porting) on it. The ride was very harsh. However, this must have been due to the 17" wheels having incorrect offsets, because the ride was much better when I put D90s back on the car.

And the ride even got better when I put Konis on the rear. Haven't gotten to the front yet. Comparing the Konis (on back) with the Bilsteins (on back)... Well, I find the ride with the Konis softer, yet still better handling as soon as you push it a little. (Thanks for the analysis, John, this might very well be the underlying mechanism.)

I did buy my shocks from Roger as well. And, I bought the externally adjustable versions. Haven't had time to play with the adjustability yet. Roger went through quite some pain to get them for me as they aren't really a "standard item." --> Thanks Roger!!

(My lesson learned so far is that before playing with shocks, make sure the offsets are correct.)

I would like to also second this. The amount of information, for instance, shared with the community is simply part of the price and benefits us all in so many ways. Not to mention the events that are organized, the personal help, etc.

Value-added: My shameless plug for business - note that we ship our Koni's with our ride height adjustment sleeves mounted in place if you order them that way. Two benefits: you don't have to argue with your old corroded stock ride height adjustment sleeves and 2) you get 5" of thread so you can raise or lower your 928 as you wish (it makes for a 3" adjustment range).

No, our Koni's aren't as inexpensive as some 10% markup internet dealer, but then again - this value added element and our service sets us apart.

Carl did my Konis as part of my Spyder build. It was discovered that my car actually had the sport springs (blue lines) that weren't offered on a '79 so someone upgraded those along the way. The Konis with sport springs give a very comfortable, but well controlled ride and I'm very happy with them
