So sedate compared to his 911 Avalanche which was just too much for my tastes. Is it me or do the headlights look like they came from an 8 series BMW?

If you mean the 840/850's popup lights, they are too small to be from those. But I think you are on the right track. I my opinion the whole front looks inspired by the Bmw 850's. The Gemballa conversion (and others) become very toned down in a darker colour, which suits the tastes of today more I think...

C'mon, rectangular headlights? On a 928?
I get more C4 corvette with maybe a little Fiero spice from the frontal design.
I like the shadowing the recess at the door and fender panels provide but not what it leads to at the quarter panel rub strip, wrap around extension semi spoiler? Too many lines, makes me think of Worfs forehead.
