Default 87 S4

This 87 S4 looks clean, and is priced descent, but not sure of service history.

I love odd/rare colors so I believe the Cassin car is beautiful (int and ext). In my mind, if the car looks like the mileage than I would consider it. If anything, the inconsistencies allow for price to be driven lower.

Good luck.

The guy bought it from Isringhausen in 2008.
His mechanic (Charlie at RennSport Tuning in Erie) is representing the car for the owner.
He sent me many photos and service records from current owner.
Interior looks real clean except minor cracking on dash, car has sports seats with minor drivers side bolster wear.
But, here are my red flags:
No service history or mileage documentation prior to current owner.
Two new sets of rear tires within 6,000 miles when they failed to pass PA inspection (too many burnouts I assume)
Car was repainted last year "due to fading" (He says trim removed, but not glass out, no photos of before or during painting)
Service history shows several requests by the owner to check A/C. (A/C only shows 60 at vents....mechanic thinks that's cold enough....my air-cooled Porsches blow colder)
Service history shows several "Battery not holding charge" (Dash gauge is definitely showing not charging...mechanic says the guage is off....well then why does the battery keep dying?)
Mechanic says he recalls changing the timing belt, but he doesn't know when and there is nothing in the service history.
Mechanic claims he is a "928 expert" but when I asked for a photo of the 14-pin connector he litterally had no idea what I was talking about.

So, here's my question for the group....>>>>my gut says run<<<<....but if you guys think I'm over-reacting is there anyone near Erie that could lay eyes on this for me?
I'd go with your gut on this one. Lots of red flags. Especially from the mechanic. If he can't remember when he changed the TB that either means he is bad at keeping records (a red flag for attention to detail) or it was so long ago that the TB needs changing by now anyway. If you are set on that car then tell the owner you want a second opinion PPI on it. Ed (linderpat) is on that side of the state (Pittsburgh) and knows of a good 928 mechanic in his area that may be able to do it.

Also agree that the S4 on BaT will go for a lot higher than the ask on this one.

If I were in the market I would be on a plane to go look at that one since I love that color combination. The paint would be my #1 concern and personally, I would need to see it myself in order to make a decision.

Assuming the exterior checks out, negotiate the price down for the TB / WP job.

Starting at $15,5 with less than 70k miles.... I would be very interested in this car if I had room for another one - but again, I love these oddball color combos which sometimes clouds my better judgement.
That burgundy interior is always going to hold the value down most do not like the "pink" external color, this has both.

I love the crazy colors Porsche has too.
And the sports seats are a huge plus IMO.
I have them in my 993 and I could sleep in that car.
My wife absolutely detests this color.

I'm going to go with my gut and pass on the Cassis in Erie.
Happy to share any info and service history I have with anyone looking to pursue it.

.

Agreed on this. I do know a good guy too north of the city, about 1.5 hrs south of Erie (George Riggins).

What exactly does that kind of mileage discrepancy mean? It looks all realistic except the two last entries. Other than odometer change, how could something like that happen?

07/08/2013 58.304
07/10/2013 13.341
07/30/2014 14.123
Now: claimed 62.000

I'm also surprised that Isringhausen would even touch a 928. I remember having a few cars worked on there. In particular my 528e back in the 80s.

That's roughly how old the timing belt is on my 79. I should change that one of these years.

Looks like a nice example.

For what it is worth...my 84 had the original belt and water pump when I bought it two years ago. Mileage on mine was about twenty K more.

Good luck, hope this one meets your needs.

Brian.

Nothing wrong with car.... just can't get out of my own head right now. So I'm going to hold off on any purchase for a few weeks.
If anyone is interested I'd be happy to share my thoughts.
