Although federal law allows importation after 25 years the state of CA will not register them. I bet VT has loosey goosey titling rules and no emissions tests required. The selling dealer probably has a contact in VT who can go in with a VIN verification form and title them and Fedex the title back to the dealer in the state of CA.

BEWARE if you are a CA buyer because you won't get CA plates on it.

There are 1 or 2 other states that follow CA's lead on importations.

That's the thing - cars over 15 years old do not require, nor are issued, a title in VT. There are other states like that as well - RI and NH come to mind. So, it is up to the buyer to obtain a title if required in the state they want to register it. I bought an old MGB from NH and had to go through that to get a title in MA - actually, with acceptable proof of ownership, such as previous registration with seller's name matching the bill of sale, it wan't that difficult.

I agree, however, that they are likely using this fact as a way to get an import easily registered in the US as a basis to allow the future owner to obtain a title.

VT places state inspection sticker top center of windshield (can't tell if one is there in the pics provided). Registration in a state not requiring title, and the fact that the selling location is all the way across the country, and it's a Japan spec car would dictate some due diligence is required to understand the ownership trail. Smells fishy to me, but could be legit.
Those pics are taken in Japan, as you can tell what kind of vans are in the background and the type of houses.
Beware, if they have a potential 6-figure car for sale and won't take any decent pics of it. Unless it is still on the boat in the Pacific....
Many things can go wrong during the trip across the Pacific.

Just had to share (no affiliation) ... funny that the seller noted that it needs a new window switch and a few other items. I think I see a fish inside the car ...

Default '82 5-speed, Alabama plates

In keeping with Dr. Bob's request, half the time I am not sure what car you guys are referring to. See Title here.

As usual no picture of the engine bay, where about half the value is or the expense could be. It looks very "wet" there. Paint is surprisingly shiny, but beware. It needs more than a few things and some TLC, probably a new interior from the pics. What is that netting on the underside/back of steering wheel cross piece? I bet he will deal.

Default BaT 86.5 Sale

This was a pretty strong sale for the seller considering the stated issues. Happy to see it. Not that long ago, a car yanked out of storage, with clutch issues, other things not working, a dent in the front fender, would have been an $8K car.

Sold for $16K

It's the 5 speed. An automatic would have been $8500. It was great for the seller.

Missed that one somehow. Does look like it has potential and reasonable to me for a 5spd given the overall higher prices we are seeing.

Sold for $16K
One of our members contacted me about the car and wanted my opinion. As it sat that car was at most a $7k car in need of a ton of work. I'm astounded that it went for as much as it did. I think I quoted him an easy $10k just to get it driveable and double that to make it a reliable driver. It is a mess. Hell, Rog and I bought a lower mile, better condition 86.5 in a better color combination and I think Roger sold it for 1/2 this ones selling price.
