More random progress this afternoon-
Verrrrrry carefully disassembled the gauge cluster, in order to hit the gauge surround with some SEM flat black. Spent ~45 minutes with a plastic razor blade slowly working the seam between the surround and the lens to get the glue to release without cracking the lens. Nerve-wracking.
Surface pre-paint:
Spots, pre-paint:
Painted and lens polished:
Also started on the re-gluing of interior panel vinyl and carpet with Weldwood HHR contact cement:
William finished going through every connection on the CE panel with fiberglass scratch brushes, plus whatever he did to make it spic n span:
Date code 11/77, 928 610 105 01.

Is that the original muffler lying on the floor by the parts cleaner? If so, can I have that?
Yes, it's the original, but it's currently a convenient carrying case for fragments of steel tubing and 5 lbs of rust dust- the inlet pipe rusted out circumferentially, so short of splitting the case and rebuilding it, it's junk. (Though it does have the right date code on it- William picked up an 80-82 muffler which will be back-dated to work with the battery box bracket:
Couple of 'insurance' exhaust pieces came in- Mark found a pair of early downpipes in his collection, and I came across a new cat as a backup, in case the original doesn't get us past smog:

I think I'd spend time getting the CIS tuning just right. Then and only then consider putting that pristine cat on there to make it perfect.
Love the look of the plated calipers, but... I don't remember -any- Porsche calipers having plating like that. Only some less-than-brite zinc pieces in the way-back period. Was there cad plating like you show hidden under a crud layer?

Yes, CIS tuning is an enormous black box to me. No new cat till I've ruined the old cat.
I was dubious about the plated calipers too, though there were hints of the original plating on more protected parts of the caliper frames, and Anderson kind of sealed the deal with this NOS caliper (albeit a floating caliper vs. the earlier floating frame calipers...)

I think this is officially the most expensive hose on a per-inch basis on a 928. At least I hope it is...

Rob,
Behind the vacuum inhibitor is a little vacuum do-dad, can't remember at the moment what it's called, but it has the orange, black/blueish vacuum lines. I believe there is a white one that goes along with those two, that runs down to the base of the throttle body. Were you able to source a vacuum line in white?
I've followed up a couple leads...but haven't been able to find white...especially in the thin-wall version that porsche used.
Brian.

The white line was present on Minerva, the nipple was broken off the 'pressure converter' but it was still in the line, so I glued it back on.
William is world-class at making those hoses clean, with acetone, elbow grease, and OCD.
The white hose is 999 239 012 90, NLA as you know. Mark does have some correct white hose but annoyingly it's part of the HVAC vac hose harness, which is ~$150. I don't know which connection the white hose in the HVAC harness goes to, but if it's hidden you could swap in some incorrect hose into the HVAC harness and use the white one in the engine bay (?)

Both Rob and I have been tackling assembly prep together and independently. Yes, no one sees much of this when it is assembled, so please keep the OCD comments to a dull murmur; have heard it before, lol!
Here is the fuel tank. Getting the insides free of tarnish was the work of pros with the right tools, but the outside is my department. There was overspray from previous paint jobs, cosmoline, and just crud everywhere.

Thank you, Rob. My brain actually screamed out loud when you mentioned all of the vacuum lines inside the dash...and I remembered thowing them all away with the rest of #613. Just one more thing to kick myself in the butt about.
Thank you, for the pictures of the muffler, too. I didn't think the original mufflers had the shield over the two tailpipes...but I see a mounting tab. I have a 82 muffler system for #225 and need to get after the transformation...every time I look under there and see that borla system I want to puke.
Brian.

Rob,
What's the OD of the white vacuum hose or tubing you are looking for?

I sourced all the vacuum line in various colors to match the original from the UK.
I have plenty left if you get stuck. IIRC there was one color I could not match.

i did the same thing and also used Mothers plastic polish on the clear face. Unbelievable change! got rid of my yellowed "unleaded only" sticker in the process.
