excellent catch! we would like to think we would have caught that on our own, but the reality is we need all the eyes we can get.

I trust that the black oil filter is sacrificial for engine run-in?
I figure you'll have a red one on there for when it matters.

Yeah, I thought that's what you did. I like the look. I wish they made a paint that would keep them looking stock, most look to shiny or paint like. Anyhow, looks great.

There are still a bunch of hose clamps, the fuel injector pipe clips, plug wire brackets, etc. I need to go over the entire thing at least twice and check all the fasteners. And then probably have William do another round, to catch what I've missed after three rounds....
Yes, l figured there's a lot of, put this on, take it back off, back on, etc...especially when you take into account the amount of lapse time and it's not like you guys are doing this on a regular basis. It's tough to remember even the simplest detail sometimes. I had an inframe job on a Maxforce DT a couple weeks ago, apart and back together in a few days, and if it weren't for the fact that I laid everything out in sequence...it would probably be waiting for me on Monday...lol.

Two thumbs up to your guys epic restoration.

Brian.

I'm mesmerized by the look of that cadmium-plated hardware. Is that really what they all looked like new?

I've painted set of manifolds with manifold paint and it started peeling off after the first heat cycle. They are not that good. I would leave them bare as they did in the factory.

They calculated at 98% humidity how many years it would take to fail. No coating necessary.

You have to think like a German.

Lots of cleaning today- we are trying to figure out when to bring the painted shell back, and William's opening gambit was to clean the overspray off my work tables.

Then he got to work on the box of interior bits. Nothing touches the car that isn't clean.

In the mean time I was having a look at the engine harness- it's pretty crispy, time to replace some of the AMP connector boots:

I've detected a possible flaw in your assembly process. I doubt the Germans drank Shock Top beer. I've been impressed by the authenticity so far but you guys need to tighten up!

That box came from 928Intl with a billion dollars of little parts in it. I have to do this sober, or the car would never get finished. I'm usually hopped up on stimulants instead.

Jim- yes, the black filter is the sacrificial/break-in one. I put it after putting a gallon of cheapie oil in it so I could spin the oil pump with a drill and wash the assembly lube off everything internally...

really? Did they roll out with a red one?

Does it really matter that you maintain the vehicle with recommended products?

Oh yeah, William will use only NOS Purolator filters from West Germany for Minerva, none of those post-reunification German or (gasp) Czech red oil filters will do.

Porsche's repro is completely wrong- lacks the right markings.
