Might want to remove the carpet now. What's underneath may need to be cleaned up and painted along with rest of car and now's the time. 02 T
Yes, absolutely. Some brilliant PO Kiborted the transmission tunnel at some point to get to the shift coupler, so that's going to get fixed properly. Interior's coming out anyway for cleaning, so this can be attended to:

Just reminiscing a bit about the early car stuff. Bought NIB 2V pistons with 10:1 compression (no dish, actually a bit of a bump) for 100 dollars from ebay to build an engine with in 2001. Wow, a long time ago.

Proof I did have them:

I like that picture! Driveline installed, plus a complete spare driveline underneath JIK. Or for later.

Notice they put in the front radiator slats last - probably for ease of hookup for the stuff on AC and the coolant temp plug.

Yes! It was a very nice surprise when you guys showed up. According to Mark I missed your departure from Sharktoberfest by only a few minutes.

I think that will be the ticket for #277 - refinish the phone's that came with the '80 since that car will never be stock.

So since so little is original and it looks pretty ghetto, I am 99% decided to have it painted.
Bummer, if it was bad but original I would leave it too. You can always paint it, time to get it on the road and put some miles on it. At least you can do this out there, we are strapping everything down for the 5 month hibernation.

That's it! OK, now that I see that pic I have a question: That car has an aluminum fan and lower ball joints ('78 only, right?) and the car above the drivetrain has a front spoiler? What is wrong with that picture or my understanding?

I hope to have a picture similar to that when it goes back together!

I'm thinking it must be a ROW model, since you can see the steel fuel lines (csi) and the manifold tubes seem larger diameter. Didn't they offer a spoiler earlier on the euro models, 80 or 81, than here in the states? I believe they had the aluminium ball joints all the way until mid 84 or something like that...but I'm not sure when they did away with the aluminium fan blades.

I was under the impression that you could spoiler anything.

I thought the 'S' spoiler didn't become an option until 80-86 only.

Correct (as usual). 80 and up and only on the "S" and Competition Package. T

More dismantlation yesterday, and some parts cleaning.

Documenting orientation of stuff during the destruction:

Inside the mold for ET's face:

28th week of 1977:

Found a broken oil level sender amidst all the sludge and gunk in the pan. Anyone ever seen a broken sender?

While we were disassembling, put the pan in the washer and let it circulate for 3 hours:

Spent some time scrubbing after softening everything up. Still needs some more de-lousing before it's lickably clean, but not bad for a 1st pass:

Original tensioner:

The boot was like a glass Christmas ornament.

Bore is trashed. Will have to have this repaired, .

Factory H4's!

Those are leveling 7" lamp hosuings, found on early US cars.

You may be able to clean up the tensioner bore with a small rotary honing tool (with a drill).

Will definitely fix the tensioner bore if at all possible. It should clean up with a small ball hone. Alternatively, Mark may have a good used one with the right date code There's a recurring idea in the Rennlist archives that the tensioner bore is teflon coated, I can't find any documentation of that in any of the factory lit.
