Not sure. But Todd who is building the 7 liter 928 engine as we speak has a hand build bike with a VW engine that will give an R1 a run for it's money in a straight line. According to Todd, his 6 liter supercharged S4 is the only thing he has ever driven faster than his bike

Some basic specs of his bike - less than 600lbs with over 400hp. It used to be his daily driver until he built the 928 - now the bike just doesn't feel fast enough (his words).

mark andersons performance at laguna seca would have put him mid pack in the superbike race this year. that means, not only would he beat many of the bikes on similar tires, but he would be these top of the line RACE bikes driven by the worlds best riders.

the ole car vs bike discussion. just looking at acceleration is like just looking at braking.

Interesting Mark.

If one considers the car rules corner and bike rules straight line on the track, and Mark Anderson's performance would place him mid pack in superbikes, what would happen if Marks car made more than 430whp...say ~500whp... wouldn't the "bike rules straight line" consideration diminish and Mark would move closer to the front of the superbike pack? Hmmm....

Regarding bikes -vs-cars...

from all the research i've done, stock sportbikes are usually faster than stock sportscars on a track until you start throwing LOTS mods at them. You get to a certain point where the car becomes capable of cornering much faster than a bike and also begins to catch up in terms of acceleration.

From what i've seen in most club-oriented classes of racing, bikes will run faster on the same track compared to cars. Once you get to things like SCCA and AMA superbike, the times become a little more similar. The track would decide which is faster.

Then you get to MotoGP. Some people say that MotoGP is the "F1 of motorcycles" which I simply don't agree with. An F1 car doesn't resemble anything close to its "production" 4-wheel counterparts. True, MotoGP bikes aren't production chassis either - but they're much closer to production bikes than F1 cars are to normal production cars. With this in mind, F1 dominates everything obviously. The only thing MotoGP can really be compared to is Le Mans. MotoGP is faster than GT2 and about similar with GT1 (sometimes faster, sometimes slower... depending on track). Once you get to the prototype Le Mans classes.... the MotoGP bikes are lagging behind.

All things considered, there isn't really a debate between bikes -vs- cars. They're comparable for the most part and to say that one is faster than the other may not always be correct.

Car vs. Bike video (with a jet thrown in for fun).

Watch as the 911 catches and blows by the bike - now take this race starting at 60mph like Lag did:

lag is a cool guy, imo... he clearly beat that bike w/that rider that day - good for him! sometimes you get lucky and score, sometimes ya don't. live for the times ya do, and keep plenty of beer around for the times ya don't

that video is great!!!

This is one of the best threads ever.

I remember the 10 Best Threads of The Year topic...

...so we need an All Time Hall Of Fame for threads like this one.

That way I can dwell upon them for my happy place while I'm bolting ice skates onto my car to get anywhere in this hellish winter wasteland.

Dead of winter here. Will only make it to 60f, when we usually have 70f afternoon highs. It's overcast too. Chance of drizzle later tonight. Not fit for man nor beast! We'll take the 4-Runner to the theater tonight, just in case the weather suddenly worsens and it rains. Winter sucks!
