Yep, the Flares were definitely "944 Inspired". According to what I was told Bob make approx 3 sets of those flares, one obviously on his car, I think Phil K's car also had a set and the other set is broken up, the fronts are on James Morrison's Track car and I have the matching never used rear flares in storage.

They were made of Kevlar and very light and strong.

Cheers,

Dave

If that car still has its original engine it would be quite a find. I think he was running a 7 liter plus 2 valver making ridiculous hp. To put that engine on a dyno would be quite an interesting event!

The car has been left sitting in this garage for years left there and the owner, has not return phone calls to the shop owner that's where I found it knowing nothing about it. Would like to find out the history if anybody does know about it I did see the picture, that it is Bob Devores Old car. Does it have a race history is he the one who still owns it and has not contacted the shop owner, trying to find out these details before I get too involved in it. The owner may realize it's there now and either come pick it up or have it finished not sure if he doesn't I wouldn't mind having it in my collection.

BTW, there as been a Maverick sighting recently. I was alerted at the local PCA breakfast (Santa Barbara) last month that there was a '88 928 convertible at the annual Concours, which I didn't attend this year. It was a bit gaudy, and the guy pulled out his smartphone to show me a photo of it and sure enough, Maverick was standing next to it talking to a guy. I said "That's Maverick Marsalis" and the guy said "Maverick Mann". So apparently a bit of a name change. I proceeded to tell him the Maverick stories.

I just checked the region magazine, "Der Auspuff" and he actually won his category, with his current alias listed but no photo. Page 15 if you are interested:

Bob Devore always held a special place in 928 lore for me (and for many others as well). What he did to develop the full potential of the early cars went far beyond what seemed possible at the time. Others were involved in those pioneering efforts, but it all seemed to coalesce around Devore as the "Arizona Highwayman."

The radical fender flares, the splitter, the big HP engine(s) and the far out thinking to get the most out of the car was an inspiration for anyone interested in wide-bodied 928's. There have been many threads about him and his cars over the years, and the Excellence Issue #22 does a good job in getting things started for anyone not familiar with his place in 928 history.

His car doesn't have the provenance of an original Porsche race car, or a place in history similar to that of the Holbert car, but it has a place somewhere within our community and it should be preserved in one fashion or another.

The Marsalis connection (many threads about that as well) is a problem for sure, but if it could be overcome, the car deserves a home with an owner who understands and appreciates the achievements of an early 928 pioneer.

I got intrigued by the references to Maverick, so followed the links. Fascinating story!

I don't think there's a connection. Earlier in the thread there was speculation that this was part of Maverick's collection that went to auction a couple of years ago, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

There's certianly a connection - photos of it inside his premises with his cars were linked/posted earlier in this thread. It does appear this car wasn't part of the big auction sale however.

e.g. the car is clearly owner by Maverick at the time this photo was taken.. note the "asap" decals (which it probably still has in its current dusty state).

I'd still want to make very sure there are no liens and surprise title issues on the car before paying for it (as with any car purchase).

OK, thanks for the correction. I actually looked through the photos of the auction before replying and didn't see this car, so I concluded it wasn't part of it. Missed that the earlier photos were truly Maverick's.

In summary, MM is widely thought to be a conman/ thief that you do not want to be involved with if you can avoid it. If he still owns the car, which he might as it seems to have not been in the auction when his shop and cars were liquidated (because he went to jail?), then you should probably walk away. Otherwise it might be an interesting project, although I don't know what practical use it would be to you.
