1987 Porsche 928
Posting this for an older gentlemen who is considering letting the car go as he can not find what is wrong with the car. He was told the fuel injectors were not opening or sticking and the remedy could be to repaired or remanufactured. He was given a price of around $1400. The shop he took it to was uncertain if this would fix his problem but it is what they want
One owner. This porsche only has 45,000 miles on it and has never seen a Michigan winter. The older gentlmen is considering getting rid of the car but prefers not if he can find the issue.
Could anything else be wrong with the car and is $1400 a good price for this particular repair?
Thanks.

There are a few things that could cause the injectors to not fire. Relays or the LH computer are the two most common. Fuel injectors as a group will not fail.

Finding a 928 knowledgeable mechanic is first order of business. Your friend needs a mechanic willing to find out the problem before tossing parts at it.

Where in MI? There are several guys on this Forum who live in MI, and are quite good mechanics (for themselves, but might consider some outside work).
Edit your title to read something like "Looking for a good S4 mechanic near XXXX MI" and you might get a better response. Since this was your first post - you do that by clicking on the paper/pencil in the lower right hand corner, then clicking on 'Go Advanced'. When done, click on Save.

Thank you all for your responses. Again this is an older gentlemen and they have been having problems finding mechanics in the metro detroit area that know much about Porsches according to him. He said the ones that are willing to fix it are trying to charge them an arm and a leg without really knowing the cause of the issue and they are not so willing to pay so much money without knowing if it will help alleviate the problem.
I could not edit the title itself when I tried by the way but if anyone knows somone in the Metro Detroit area I will gladly pass along the information.
Thanks so much again and I will tell him everything you all have told me!

This is totally off the wall but is this elderly gentleman sure it is the injectors? If it is simply that the car won't start it could be something much simpler and cheaper. As those who helped me out last spring might remember, my problem was nothing more than a dirty fuse connection for my fuel pump. As for the age of the "elderly" gentleman, I submit he might be a youngster relative to me - I'm about three weeks from 79 years old.

That seems very fast to make a call on the injectors.
I recommend taking a look at http://www.jdsporsche.com/fault%20find.html
I remember my current 928 s4 would not start time with 38k miles. I tried jumping or bridge the relay and the wire got hot. It turns out the strainer or fuel pump was clogged. I removed the strainer and after looking at the gas I decided it would be a good preventative measure to replace the pump and filter. The trainer was horribly covered in rust.
You can check for spark by unplugging one sparkplug wwire and spark plug from the engine. Leave it connected but not screwed in the engine. Have it touching the engine. Don't touch the car and have a friend crank it over once. You should see the spark plug spark.

You can also use a noid light for the injectors. You check out a kit from auto zone or buy one. You unplug an injector and plug the light into the connector.you crank the engine over. If the light turns on the fuel injectors are getting power.

I'm betting this can be fixed for lots less than $1400. But the knowledgeable gentlemen here (not me) need lots more info re fuel and relays and fuel pump and volts at batt. and condition of ground strap. Injectors can be cleaned for lots less, but of course there is labor getting the buggers out.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Yeah let's say it is a bad ecu. You could have a well known company rebuild it for a lot less. It sounds like to me that maybe the injectors are not getting power and the magical solution the mechanic qoute him for is to buy replacement brand new bosch injectors hoping that it would open.

The title of this post is pretty generic and unlikely to grab the attention of the right people.
I would second the suggestion you post another appeal, titled something like "Need 928 Help in/near Detroit." You can paste a link to this thread in the new post.
And there's this. I searched thread titles for "Detroit," looking for RListers who are in the area. They have a monthly get-together. It's worth talking to the locals.

Metro Detroiters, know of any nice 928s for sale
There are lots of others.
There's another thread from the same person.

Mechanics or shops in michigan?
