ticking noise

Unhappy ticking noise

I searched to see if I could find anyone with the same symptoms but no luck. Anything that I read that seemed similar didn't describe the sound as coming and going.

My 1980 seems to have a ticking or clicking noise coming from the motor which is intermittent. It seems to come and go periodically and I can't correlate it with anything such as low oil (pressure seems fine and oil level is ok), no difference between hard or easy driving, a/c on or off etc.

Anybody have some ideas as to what it may be or how to remedy the sitution?

For now, this is my daily driver until I can afford to pick up a 993 and let the two-eight have some days off. I constantly live in fear that something very expensive may go wrong with the motor or transmission before that happens so I don't want to ignore any strange sounds etc even though the car is running great.

I'm at 111,000 milrd and maybe 10,000 away from another scheduled timing belt and waterpump.

Try the screwdriver stethoscope -or a piece of PVC pipe around the cam tower covers.
Might be an Idler or the tensioner saying hello.

Try some Techron and see whether it frees up the valve train.

whooah, Jedi-master Struthers, hang on a second......"screwdriver stethescope"? I'm not a doctor....I haven't any idea what that means. Whats that in lamen's terms? Let's assume its an idler or a tensioner, is this a big-$ repair job? (please say no!)

ES, you're talking about "techron" like the animated cars in the Chevron commercials are always hyping right? Is that stuff available in a separage bottle as a fuel additive at Pep Boys, Kragan auto parts etc?

The screwdriver stethoscope technique can be VEEEERRY dangerous if you get it wrong!
REMEMBER!!!! THE SHARP END GOES ON THE ENGINE, THE H*A*N*D*L*E* GOES AGAINST THE EAR!!! Put the SHARP end on the engine and it will transmit the noise to your ear more loudly as you get closer to the noise.
You can buy Techron as a gasoline additive in any Chevron station. Rislone will work also and won't turn your car into an animated toy.
What flavor (year) 928 are you running?

Chances are it's just a sticky lifter or two. A little bit of grit, gunk, crud, etc will get into an oiling hole and it won't pump up... clack, clack, clack. Put in a quart of Rislone (Autozone, Pepboys, etc). Run it for a few hundred miles, drain, replace with fresh whatever. Should help alot with an valve noise. 'Course, the most efficient method to keep it from clacking is to go drive the **** out of it. Often.

Flavor: 1980 model year, 3spd auto, schwartz-metallic/tan&brown leather, S-type spoilers, Eibach springs, 225 & 265 Bridgestone's on 18inch turbo twists. My exec cruiser has been great fun on my daily Santa Barbara to Ventura to/from work drive every day. (I pity those pool fools going the other way stuck in bumper to bumper) It has been an absolute pleasure and I can go literally as fast as I dare w/out endangering others or myself while my Uniden radar/lazer detector sniffs out anything unusual (except "instant on") At high engine speeds I don't want that clicking to be the precursor to some catastrophic mechanical event. I've maintained pretty religiously (U should see how much I've spent...far more than its worth!), has been that most of my problems are minor oil leaks etc but the overall integrity of the motor and tranny has been solid. I get the feeling that an additive is likely to solve the problem. Will pick some of that stuff up to see how it affects the motor and repost.

Hey Mike, is this Rislone you're talking about an oil additive while ES is talking about a fuel additive? I'm planning to put some stuff in the oil for about a week or two to resolve some minor gasket leaks and then re-fill with some new oil (not synthetic) afterwards and see if that reduces the leakage. Will/could these different oil additives react badly together?

dshulik,

Are you sure it is coming from the engine? Does it vary with RPM or Tire speed? There is the O2 counter under the little cover between the passenger seat and the door that makes a little clicking sound that I hear intermittently on my 1980. Drove me crazy because I thought it was coming from the right front which has been completely rebuilt.

Can you hear the fuel injecters?

I have the same fuel injectors as you do, and they are loud on my car. I can hear them at idle, even with the hood closed. This is much louder than any other car I've played around with. I'm droped literal gallons of fuel injector cleaner in it theing, and they are the same. Other than they are nosie, I have good mixture control, and it runs good. I also have a VERY loud exaust. (no cat, no resonator, and a sorry muffler will do that.) Although, they are always there, not intermentent.

I'm hopeing to make it to the Texas Shark fest, and see if I can hear the injectors on their car.

You guys crack me up!
-nope, not an "inside the car" noise, definately a motor-related sound. I'm fairly certain its the valves as the sound is directly related to the RPM's and not throttle modulation.

I had a ticking noise in my '82 eariler this year. I assumed it was a lifter and fiddled with oil etc for a while. Then the timing belt skipped a bunch of teeth, so I found the problem. In my case the ticking noise (I swear it sounded like lifters) was a loose timing belt. In my case the tooth skip did no harm to the motor, but while the belt was loose it ate up the cam sprockets quite a bit. I think the noise tended to be worse at idle. The root cause was the plastic bushings on the tensioner arm. I'm not quite sure about the source of the ticking sound. Belt slap, I assume.

Did your timing belt's life end prematurely (less than 30K miles)?
