The timing belt was pretty new, the rollers were all in good shape and the water pump was fine. I did replace the belt as it got pretty chewed up in the process, but I don't think it was the cause. I also had to replace the right side cam pully as it also got badly worn by the loose belt. The only thing I found really wrong was the plastic bushings, which did not really satisfy me. In fact I suspected that the water pump was going out but I just could not feel a problem with the bearing. So when I started smelling coolant this summer I did not even check, I just changed the water pump. But the old one was fine and the coolant leak is somewhere else. Anyway, there must be 5 or 10 parts, besides the belt, that can cause the belt tension to be off.

Will/could these different oil additives react badly together?
Yeah, Rislone is an oil additive/detergent. I ran a quart thru the 78 to clear up identical symptoms; it had been sitting for a while and even a fresh oil change didn't keep it from clacking occasionally. Did the Rislone, ran it fairly hard for a week or so, then a fresh batch of oil/filter. No more clacking.

You'll probably see some improvement in leakage by running dino oil instead of synth. I put some Valvoline Max-Life in the tranny of the 84 and it all but stopped my torque converter seal leak.

Good luck.

Been a while since I posted (under a different user handle) this but the happy ending is that I switched to 20-50W oil and the clicking magically disappeared. When I got to about 3500 miles on the oil it started again. I just changed the oil and its quiet again. 125K miles and still running (but not ticking)!

Dragging this topic up since there's a lot of talk about Rislone... I was at the local auto parts store and saw that there's Rislone Engine Treatment and some Rislone Oil Treatment... anyone know which is for what and what the difference between the two is? I assume you can drive for a few hundred miles with either before doing an oil change etc?

Here is my experience. If the car has been sitting awhile, then it will have that horrible sound. Don't worry, it's no big deal. Change your oil with a non-synthetic (30W-50W). It should go away.

Are these noises immediate, for example when you turn the key??

Because I get a similar ticking from the engine, but only after it's been driven a little and warm...

BTW Brian, what kind of wheels are those

Rislone made zero difference to me on my auto. What did help, was to let the car idle while I washed her and dried her. It allowed the engine temp to rise far above what I usually experience in driving, and the fans repeatedly cooled her down. End result -- no more ticking. Of course I wouldn't take a ticking sound lightly ....Udai had a 928, and I bet you could draw the argument a bit further that of course this implies that WMD were hidden in all Porsche 928 water pumps .... Do you ever see any orange-coloured mushrooms emitting from the engine?
