Its an 80. So it would make sense that it is an 03.

Thanks guys. I am unsure as to the (exact) path at this time. The reason I needed this car is because I am rebuilding the transmission for my truck as the one in there is losing a stoic battle at 240,000 miles. I have other 928s I have to finish various large and small jobs on and then they can be driven temporarily.

**** happens. But for the amount of blood sweat and pesos I have put into Leeroy, I would have thought the soul of the car would have treated me a bit better recently. Its going to sit for a while one way or another.

Either way, it was very very old, and is not very very broken.
harmonics would be a series of vibrations that can cause instantaneous forces. in this case, it might have been a single force that did it in.

remember my example of how the tail can wag the dog?? here is a great example of how the forces at the tire, reflected back to the driveline can be WAY more impressive! there could have been 1000ft-lbs of torque acting on the driveshaft, after the TOB locked up. the car is moving.... say in 5th and we already determined that it takes about 2000ft-lbs of torque to break the tires free.......... because it happend in 5th gear, at 2:1 , thats 1000ft-lbs on the drive line. if it happened in 2nd, a gear where 300ftlbs can break the tires free, that force wouldnt have broken the driveline.

the point here is.... too bad the short shaft didnt break instead. this becomes a $4000 part vs a short shaft of several $$hundred.

How does the failed TOB lock up the driveshaft?

BC, can you not find a half-decent box to just swap-in?
Low dollar (or near-free).

80 ROW had 05.
81-on USA then got it, IIRC.

The trans has to come out, what would be the point of wasting the labor of the R&R to put back a half decent trans vs a rebuilt?

Problem is that broken input shaft I think makes it an unacceptable core to any rebuilder, its just some spare likely unneeded parts right now.
