Default 5 race 928's on track....!!!! (norcal weekend)

I decided to start a new thread...

It was an EPIC 928 race weekend

Sean and I got our new Euro 16V racers on track (thanks Ken)....it took a mountain of refreshing to get both of them ready....I was blessed to have 2 mechanics for the weekend since my dislocated shoulder but me about worthless in terms of wrenching

It sounds easy.....my car had fresh oil, fresh coolant (also known as water), fresh trans oil and fresh brake fluid......same for Sean's..... plus Sean's car needed a seat installed....then adjusting aliignment-ride height to our preference....sounds easy....ended up a mountain of work!!!

After a LONG day Friday we got both Euro's ready to ROCK (video pending)....Jeff arrived to drive my Estate & Rick Petty drove his pristine racer as well....Ricky Petty used Jeff's S4 in driving school (yes he is the luckiest 16 year old in the world) It was a great combo.....Jeff and Rick had an epic battle and Sean & I also were together for both races.....it was perfect...mosty since I won the 1st race....but Sean beat me in the 2nd race....(video pending)....

Here are some pics... Including Sean's destruction of a pristine $25 used tire due to 1" toe out on 1 side....

Some pics of my suspension on the new racer...Heim joints all around...quite nice....once I lowered it down...95mm ride height...no bottoming out!!! The super sitff suspension works great really low..

MK showed up Sunday......managed to race at the top of the field....kit was great seeing a 928 lead the race......

enough talk...time for pics

Looking forward to the pics. Sorry I couldn't make it after all. I had a wonderful weekend rebuilding our mailbox. Turned into a major project. Not done yet.

Show us the suspension with the heim joints.

Great weekend. Note to all adjusting the camber really affects the toe out. As in more camber more toe out.

More negative camber moves the bottom of the wheels out, increasing toe out a whole bunch unless you lengthen the tie rods at the same time. Dropping ride height also grossly affects toe (and camber).

Definitely a great weekend!

I started out flat, like at Laguna.
My buddy Roque (and family followed us up to camp and watch, 5+ hrs towing and a spare tire catching on fire!!!) Seems an earlier accident caused his spare to jar loose, rub up against the exhaust and catch fire on Pacheco Pass.

Anyway, changed out the fuel filter. I was back!

Had a great set of runs with Jeff in the Estate.
Man can he handle that car!!

I guess the tires only have about 5 good laps, then no more. with 8 laps, that doesnt work.

Just a blast!!!

Ya..well used Toyo's...hooooweee.

I havent taken a green flag race in..9 _years_ before Saturday AM.

The last set of shoes, suit, socks..were bought in 2000 say the tags, boxed up after the 2002 season.

BUT..

Well, I "worked hard" in warmup to learn a new car on a well familiar track after only watching cars on it from a tow truck, and now as a Race Director. 2:25 best lap. Not much traffic, I was a back marker everyone passing me, none were in the way of me anywhere..so I ran clean the whole session.

And it beat me up...physically and mentally. This want -my- car, or for fun. It was

About 30 minutes of reflection on..and read this closely Petty Jr..._fundamentals_ and I was ready for the qual session an hour later.

2:14...with traffic.

Fundamentals. Head up, plan. Entry point, apex, exit point. The cars around you are "there" but not primary issues. They have to pass you. The line. Drive it.

Still beat up mentally, but happier.

Race #1. Caught 2 rows of traffic on the green flag..being on the left to start was beneficial..but still, I found petty, sean, and brian purty fast up a few rows ahead of me.

Still had a devil of a time dialing in 'the' brake-turn-gas point for T2 the whole race..but..

A lap or so in, caught Petty with more speed out of 15, and motored by on the front straight, then at some point passed one of the faster SpecE30's from my nasa group I RD for with NASA.

I could _see_ brian and sean, but they could bust around traffic with much much more torque and HP (~50ea) then I had, and gave up on em.

I let other races go by me by point-by, and enjoyed working fundamentals thru the race. Just me, just MY race, monitor mirrors, but nothing in them matters. My line, they gotta pass me.

None did.

Ended with an amazing..to me, set of laps that read 2:10. Within .5s of brian and sean.

The fun part..was 5laps in, as warned by Brian, it all goes pear shaped.

Tires are cooked..gone. Fun.

The fronts needed another 50' of braking..which took a while to adjust to, which led to a few interesting things in T9 and T10..but a pitch & gas to scrub the excess speed away, no probs.

Now..T11..at least 2x..wiiiiild drift up and out of it. Once..a very very prolonged hard drift and minor tank slapper down to T13. Ask Perry.

Never give up the gas until you hit 89degrees sideways, then God cant help you...rode it out, held position. T14 became interesting too, but still, had a TON of fun the last 3 laps.

2nd race, repeat of first, tried to run 3 hard laps, then 3 calm ones to have two good hard ones to finish. Ran 3 hard, then had to let petty by as I came down a hair in effort to pace him..when the X (two to white) came out..started to reel him in...got within distance of making a good attempt at a pass..but tires would not let it happen thri T14 with one to go..had to let him off. 2:11s, everyone was down a second..it was hotter out.

Ton O fun..went to give **** to the E30 guys who didnt realize it was their NASA boss in the crapcan that handed them their *** earlier in the day.

TON of fun..tons...

Would I buy a 928 race car? Probly..but a lower power more finese build..if I wasnt saving for a plane. Miss racing I do.

Jr Petty...fundamentals are about you..not the car. Racing is way more fun on 13" 185 tires...and rotors that bust WIDE open from the bearing hub to the edge 1/4" if you actually use them.

I raced THIS car for years. If the class was still around, you should be in it. Drive these competitively, you can drive _anything_.

PS: You can buy my car in Forza too...and it's bad ***.

Jeff
Great write up......the well worn RA1's on the Estate perform exactly like you said.....pretty solid for about 10 minutes......then they get to about 35psi (hot) and it quickly goes away......I had them as high as 39psi off track and that was HORRIBLE....metal roller skates....

Which is about what my 295/35-17 Hoosier A6's on the front of my new racer were like.....being 5 years old didn't help.....at least I figured out why the car wouldn't turn right before the 1st race on Saturday....because the left front tire was CORDED....and a small flat spot... I am SO glad the guys convinced me to put on the Pirelli slicks on the front to race with.....WOW decent 275/645-18 slicks on the front with the 5 year old Hoosier A6 315/35-17 on the rear is INTERESTING..but I like it.....talk about mad grip on the front....oversteer city....I LOVED it.....got my best lap on this setup and the car felt worlds better.....but we did slam the ride height down to 95mm too.....it was 130mm before... The rear is still way too high at about 190mm.. Front camber went up.....2.8 to 3' which is perfect for the slicks.....but need to check toe now..... Good thing my power steering pump blew up after 4 laps.....I felt the steering getting odd.....thinking I had a cut tire from excessive fender rubbing I came in....just to find ATF all over the place and leaking out the front seal of the pump....

I am happy with the 2:04.3 I ran in the race just before bringing it in....I was able to handle the very fast custom Miata I usually have a hard time with in the estate with ease....and I was right on the tail of the super cheaty for GT3 Honda Civics....with slicks all around and proper alignment-ride height I will OWN those pesky civics..... If my power steering held on I would have passed them for sure....car felt "in the zone"...other than the super loose rear end.... :>)

Yep! DA EEGE! Too Funny.

We still have a class for RX-7's in Westeren Canada they are more annoying than Miatas if that's possible. You're right though if you can drive one of those things fast you CAN drive anything.

So glad i came out! that was acutally a ton of fun. some great racing too with the BMW, porsche GT-3, the mustang and the little mini pumped up cayman R. all of us were within a second of eachother, but all these guys were on either new hoosiers, or new yoko slicks! the one time i dont bring my other set of rims and tires, i needed them!!!!! ahhhh! anyway, it didnt matter, because this kind of racing is fun too. still great battles, but no need to kill yourself for the $5 trophy, because there is none!
Toyos are ok, for just playing arond and car shake downs, but in a tight race, they are boarderline dangerous. a couple of nasty close calls. full drifts down the "Hill bypass" when i got brake checked, which was cool, fun, but a littlel uncomfortable at 80 mph down a stretch of road i havent been on in 10 years!
thanks for the pic brian! great to lead that pumped up bmw with the built motor for a few laps. he had the yokes, which were no match for the '07 toyos. however , next time ill bring the hoosiers!

thanks for all the help guys, especialy sean, who helped me with a disconnected swaybar when the bolt fell out of the drop link. when i had NO pwer in any high g turn, i kew something was broken. (diff or swaybar mount) turns out to be a free 1/2" fine thread bolt! other than that, the replacement holbert car ran flawlessly and I drove it up and back 2.5 hours to the track. (normally 3.25hours when trailering). THATS why i drive it to the track! (plus getting 22mpg doesnt hurt either! )

Great to have all the 928ers out there. jeff, RP, brian, sean, and the rest. nice sunday of racing and car stuff!
