Adam,
I must admit you guy's are racers. Will it be a double pull, single install ? If any help is needed I would want to be considered.

Car is driving fine, pressure and temp is good. Still ticking, but not getting that angry clacking like before. Rev it up to 3K rpms. All is good. Go up to 3.5K, no problem. Last one for the night, try 4K. As the tach sweeps up to 4k the engine dies, big plume of steam. Put it in neutral and coast to the shoulder. Even with the engine off huge amounts of steam coming out the tail pipe . Look under the car, and water is gushing out of the seams where the exhaust system bolts together. Soon, I'm standing in a puddle of water. Well, I guess this one is not going to make it to the track day May 12. I was hoping to be one of the lucky ones to drop in a used 928 motor and have a quick fix. Not in the cards for me. Time to pull the motor and rebuild it correctly.
That sucks.

I'd have to guess that besides the obvious lifter problem, there must have been something that "fell" down the intake port or down the spark plug hole and was caught between the piston and the head...eventually cracking the cylinder.

That sucks!

+1 Adam and Tom. Mr Moming this w/k but it'd be good kid experience too. They have already done Intake R&R, OPG/MM, TB/WP so an engine swap is good for them too

I've got my youngest son's lacrosse game to go to in the morning. I would anticipate getting out to the shop and getting started around 3pm. Feel free to text me if you want an update as to a start time.

Had a full house today at the shop (John D, Tom supercedar, Bill HB4, and Dave H) helping Adam..... I left at 10:30pmish.... replacement engine was in...and they were fussing with the clutch. Still lots to do...but they got quite a bit done in a short period of time..

When they pulled the old engine...number 8 was full of water.. (the knocking sound was coming from #4)...so it'll be interesting when the engine comes apart .

Water in a cylinder will cause a rod knock.

Engine is in...and running...no shakedown cruise tonight...but at least he'll have a couple of days to test it.. ...Here's a couple of videos of the first start (first vid the engine started but revved high so he shut it down). Second vid, idle is adjusted .

Great to hear. I like your persistence. And the clutch?

Only ran it for a few minutes to make sure it didn't have any noises or leaks. I should be able to drive it around some today to see if everything is in working order.

So here it is folks the post –mortem on the 4.7 not for the faint of heart.

We had pulled the plugs and all looked fine except #8 which was full of water. John Davis came out to help with the post-mortem. We started doing the victory dance as we were pulling the head off the studs because #8 was intact. Could it be that I’d get out of this with only doing a head gasket replacement?
Then John says “What is that!”. Look over to #5 and there at two vertical lines going up the cylinder.
Pull off the head gasket and a section of the cylinder falls away:

Here’s with the piece removed:

No evidence of what got down in the cylinder. From the rust spots, looks like somethimg ferrous must have been dropped in.

BUT… it doesn’t end here.
The original 4.5L that had come with the car, which also had locked up, was there sitting on stand. Tools were already out. Let’s pull a head and see what we can see:
#8 on the 4.5:

Something odd is going on around here.
