The 4.7L, although I'm not happy about it, I can understand. The motor was an unknown that had sat for a very long time, many, many hands were on that motor putting it together (my sons and their friends included), and I wasn't watching over everyone's shoulder when it was worked on (that won't be happening again). I took a stethoscope, boroscope, and a magnet to each cylinder (next time the heads just need to come off), and came up empty. I was lax on this build because the 16v motors can take a large amount of abuse, and I truly didn't think it was possible to wind up with this kind of damage having done the investigation into the sound and not coming up with any clues. So next time, it's back to the OCD / **** retentive / screen off the build area with white sheets environment.

The 4.5L is a totally different story. This motor was a runner from the beginning, survived two track days at Spokane - that's 10 hour roundtrip each time, and out on the track all day, and never made a sound except just before it expired.

One thing for sure, the 4.5L in the car right now is not going to get run with that CIS unit on it. I'm seriously wondering if a part of the casting has degraded and is dropping bits into the intake tract. Just too weird.

True...it's the only part that was common to both engines... did you find any metal bits (cause) in either bore?
