Engine Fire
Was at the gas station this morning and started the car after fill-up.
I heard a POP sound and then smoke started billowing out of the front right area.
Ran to get a fire extinguisher then lifted the hood and blasted the fire. About 1 minute elapsed time.
Looks like very little was damaged. Small paint bump on the hood - no apparent damage to the hood metal.
Fire seems to have originated from the area of the fuel gauge located on the end of the fuel rail. Is that even possible?
Fuel was coming out of the guage weep hole after I got it contained.
To add insult to injury, I had the heater blower on full when I exited the car and blasted the engine compartment. The entire interior cabin is covered in extinguisher dust. So much for the pollen filter.
It's now at my buddy's shop in Carlsbad being looked over.

WOW! thats an OH $HIT moment. At a gas station as well.
Glad it appears to be minimal and that you had a CO2 and not a chemical ext...imagine the mess then!
Gas weeped out of the hole and dribbled down onto the headers...or under residual pressure sprayed out?
You defiinitley got to it quick as the intake tube closest doesnt appear to be badly burned.

This is the very reason I have a giant Halon system in my car.

Looks like dry powder to me... Randy how's the hood? on the face of it it doesn't seem that bad - allowing for all the white stuff.
If you need more peace of mind after this all gets sorted - consider the halon extinguisher and engine compartment deployment system...
Hope there are no surprises.. if the guage let go then thats a bummer...!

That is the reason I will never put a gauge like that on my car.
I have said it to a lot of folks, mark my words, some one is going to set a 928 on fire because of one of them, looks like Randy takes first place.
Sucks man, glad you got it put out though.

Randy,
Wow- bummer! Good job you reacted so quickly- must fit my fire extinguisher tomorrow!
Either the Bordon gauge tube in the guage head has split or the mounting joint failed by the sound of it. Another possibility could be if the gauge vibrates maybe soemthing on the rail mount fatigued- unlikely I auapect.
Hope not too much damage done and look forward to learning what the root cause of the failure is.
