Just an update on the progress of my 85. The car is PNO'd (planned non op) and cost me $680. This does not include smogging fees and an $87 registration fee
By the end of the weekend, I will have the following done (pics to follow).
Intake refresh, etc. including the following new parts:
  • TPS
  • ISV
  • Heater valve
  • plugs
  • hoses
  • boots
  • gaskets
  • Injectors inspected and cleaned
  • Vacuum lines
  • fuel lines
  • Fresh oil and filter (mobil 1 15/50w)
  • Coolant drained/replaced (g5) (block and radiator)
  • Used low mileage rear shocks and springs (S4 coil-overs) installed.
  • Gear oil (Redline GL5) replaced.
  • 17 inch OE Cup I (C2 Turbo) wheels (7 and 8) shod with new Yokahama tires
  • H4’s
  • Momo Competition steering wheel with 1” spacer

By mid-July:
  • Motor: TB/WP front of motor service.
  • Inner/outer tie rods
  • Lower ball joints
  • Clutch inspected and replaced if necessary (initially with my MY80 DD set-up)
  • Alignment
  • Front shocks replaced
  • Interior swap with a 8.5/10 black interior.
  • Dynamat where appropriate (I have only one box of the stuff)
  • Factory installed sport seats will be replaced with excellent early seats, with female seat belt adapted to fit 85 chassis.
  • Install and paint my Aero Mirrors (manual initially)
  • FPR and Porken Chips
  • Smog Pump Delete/CARB catalytic converter installed
  • New Alpine w/built in Sirius, Bluetooth and USB/Ipod adapter friendly, Polk Audio speakers, Spare tire subwoofer (Mazda Protégé 6/using Jerry Feather spare tire cover). Kind of a ghetto version of Hans and Paul's offering.
  • Paint/clear will be buffed
  • New Spoiler
  • 928MS spoiler protection plates.
  • Smogged and on the road.

Future
Mid-grade, professional respray in original paint color with good quality paint.
Rob Budd or Paul Champagne seat covers in black leather for original sport seats.
Late style black door speakers.

Wish me luck!

I did the same thing w/a ghetto version using a spare kicker tube I had lying around.

You should start you own thread for this.... (almost missed this, based on the title)

Good Luck!

Nah, this is all money and stuff saved for the other car - going on almost two years now. I am a 928 bottom feeder actually.

Landseer, I guess I should start a thread. Maybe after I grab some more pics.

I am doing everything myself except the timing belt/front of motor work. I bartered with a pro for the work. I am too nervous to do this on a 32v motor.

Here is a pic of the subwoofer I am using. They can be had for very cheap. They are only 100watts. I will be poking holes in Jerry's spare cover and backing it with a breathable fabric. Most of them do not have the harness/pigtail. After the google, I found out it is only an 8 pin computer power cable available at any Fry's or similar. Here is one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/EATX-Computer-Mo...item3a67623ecb

Here is a slightly different one out of a Mazda with a pig tail. This one is by Bose. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2004-...item4aac2b9ec3

Well, the car is officially smogged and registered and on the road as of today. The car smogged above average in all categories with the stock cats. I drove her for about 45 minutes before smog on the Pacific Coast Highway .

The interior, while it still needs a lot of detail work is now black and very serviceable. The seats are out of an S4 as I did not feel comfortable, after posting here, putting early seats in a late car. The seats are not quite as nice as the early ones I had, but they are definitely nice enough for me.

I need brakes and shocks.

The HVAC is wonky, but I have a plan of attack reading Wally P's troubleshooting techniques. Best I can tell, I will be needing a new blower relay.

I have a slight shudder at 3k. I believe I need to change my plug wires and caps and rotors. Otherwise, the car runs really well.

Anyway, I will post more pics once I get the interior better sorted and cleaned (I did not do the color change or the TB/WP).

Awesome! Finally a drivable 928. Hopefully, it will bring you much enjoyment. Little details to be cleaned up, I'm sure, but you will get that done. Hope you hung on to the core sport seats for eventual recovering.

Man, I wish mine had those smog numbers! Excellent.

As to back registration fees in CA - my understanding is that cars drop off the DMV records in CA after 7 years of failure to regsiter. You have to re-establish title and register the car, but there are no back fees, unless something has changed in DMV procedures in the last few years. I had a Mercedes I did not register for 10 years. I went down to DMV, it was not in their records, so I got a new title and registered it just paying that's year's fee.

Brendan, it bucks, kind of like when you are first learning to drive a stick (but not as severe). The weird thing is the window is very small, from 3000 to maybe 3050. It happens in every gear, but it does not feel like a drivetrain problem (I figure there would be other symptoms). My mechanic (who did the TB/WP) drove it and thought it might be the wires/dist./rotors. The wires definitely need replacing. The problem disappears and then she pulls as she should. He did say that he has never seen this problem with such a short RPM window. He has an associate who has the means to check the timing at load across RPM's and we can try that as well before I change wires, etc.

Almost, a '79. I will be replacing that at some point with a shorter one.

Thanks Karl. That nice dash in there is by your incredibly kind graces.

Yes, I still have the sport seats. They are sitting loosely in my other project.

Lots of little details for sure and one big one, PAINT!

I was really pleased with the smog results.

My MY80 is out of the system, but this one required a $680 ankle grab (just to non-op) as it was last registered in '06.
