All this time I thought "ricer" ment a couple Mexican kids in a lowered Honda with no shocks.....

 

Style is a personal thing – and also very much dependent on your generation. I’ve been around long enough to remember when NA cars were covered in chrome so to adopt the ‘European look’ kids painted the chrome black and removed all the badges. Over time the mainstream adopted that look and most cars came with blackened trim and little embellishment. Now the trend has clearly reversed, but with brushed metal (whether real or plastic), piano black, and various textured surfaces (whether wood, CF, or other). So while high end cars actually had visible CF, and kids followed the look (the ricer phase), but now it’s gone mainstream – see the pictures of a factory M3 referenced as a comparison in the original posts. Over time if a model becomes a classic then the most valued copies are either original or modified within strictly accepted ranges - and P-cars of other types seem to have defined what that means for a P-car. So I think the question is does one care more about future value or immediate enjoyment? If the two can be blended, especially by reversible mods - so much the better IMO.

 

FYI, DiNoc does NOT look like real carbon fiber.....not even from a few feet away....

....and yes I work with CF.

 

Well that is certainly your opinion. I have never used a wet lay up for carbon fiber. The parts I fabricated were from prepreg materials, vacuum bagged, and cured in an oven. The appearance was remarkebly similar.

I ordered some of DecalFX's red "3d Carbon Fiber" it doesnt look very real in person. online it looks ok but in person its just super glossy. I ordered a small piece just to see what it looked like and since I was not going to put it in or on my car I tried to wrap my iphone case whis is just plastic and it was pretty difficult. I dont know what others experiences are with the stuff or how similar it is to dinoc but I had a hard time doing it. I got it done eventually but took like 30 minutes and results were not amazing.

 

That's not good - any idea of the manufacturer? The 3M product has a pressure sensitive adhesive that allows you to position the film and will not set until pressure is applied. Were you able to reposition your film easily? I want to get some of the transluscent red film for the tail lights as opposed to the testors lacquer paint that other members have used - hopefully it will be a smooth process.

 

Love the stuff. Put some on the back of my iPad last year to protect it. Looks good, prevents scratches.

FWIW, Porsche uses carbon fiber in all sorts of interior bits from the factory exclusively for look, and not weight savings or structure.

 

Cole, where did you get yours, I think I need to do something in my car wrapped up Can't be left out.

 

I honestly don't remember. It was one of the hundreds of websites you can get it through.

My console was trashed in my Cayenne Turbo. A new "carbon fiber" one was about $900. or just $300-$500 for the plain black replacement that did not last in the first place. They had some sort of "soft touch" rubbery coating on it that wears off over time.

I figured it was worth a shot to just try re-skining it with this stuff. Nobody is trying to "fool" anyone into thinking its "real carbon fiber" and some how going to make my 5200lb CTT lighter and faster. The stuff just adds a nice "accent texture" into my sea of black interior. No different than a manufacturer texturing a plastic dash to make it look better, or covering it in vinyl or leather.

 

If you guys search "Di-Noc" in the 944 forums, this guy did his dash trim and it looks spectacular. I am getting my roll next week!!

Maybe it's the way the photos are taken, that CF doesn't look as busy or dizzying as other CF wrap that I've seen. I kinda like it.
