Default Big cams in a 5.0L

So running the new billet cams, with 230 duration @ .050" and .437" lift (intake) and very similar exhaust. The LSA is 114 deg.

The idle is exactly the same as stock, it is not lopey or rough at all!

Need to do some more tuning but it sure has made a difference in top end power....

1st gear in the wet is USELESS above 3000RPM. Same tires, similar conditions it use to be ok till around 4500......

Actually I could always use 2nd gear without an issue, 1st would take off about 1/3 the time.

It is hard to say, I still need to pull some fuel out of the top end, and add some to the mid range.

Hey Colin: That was quick. Did you get the new baseline dyno done with the manual tranny?

Bill,

Baseline with auto was 276RWHP,
Baseline with manual was 303RWHP.

I have not had a chance to get back to the dyno yet as I just got them done today. It took me longer than I would have liked to do the valve springs........

2nd gear in my Auto is useless at 1/2 throttle in the wet.

Come on buddy, toss us a bone.

Understood. Wow, quite a large difference between auto and manual.

Colin,
Did you buy a set of Simard's cams, or are you talking about the run of cams that you had made? The only reason I ask is that your production run cams were cast and milled, where as Simards are milled only from billet. There is a huge difference in strength between cast and billet.

These are my cams Sterling. Nothing against MS cams, but chill cast is better for a street car IMO

It has to do with the hardening. A chill cast cam has a much thicker hardness layer. As well should you choose to change the grind on a chill cast 90+% of the time you don't need to reharden. Mike's style would need to confirm the depth of the hardness or reharden.

How many 928 street people do you suppose have ever gone back and changed the profile?

For that matter, how many 928 people with track engines do this? Anderson's "very early" welded race cams are like fingerprints...no two are the same. Does it matter? I think until someone can beat him, at the track, we won't find out.

Going to have to dig a bit deeper than that, for a reason.

Cost difference would have worked. "Potential" problems (which he has seen no sign of) with the compatiblity of the hardness of the cams and the lifters might have even gone "under the radar".

I think every other reason I could possibly think of favors the billet steel cams.

Billet seems to be more forgiving as far a high spring pressures go.

I just meet Colin for Breakfast and he had his car there with the new stage11 cams in it . He still has quite a bit of tuning to do yet , but he only just finished the install . The car had a nice smooth idle , I thought it would be a little rough , but it was very stock like . When he opened it up , the car sounded vicious . Hopefully in the next couple of days he will have some dyno results . I had a good look at the cam set before they were installed , and they looked very nicely done . We were compairing them to a reweld set and several things were noticable , like the wear on the sprokets , and the perfect fit into the heads . Very nicely done Colin .
