260kph at 4100 rpm? I would have expected it to be over 5000 rpm. What gearing is that?

Put my door panel back together, had it apart for 2 months and finally got around to putting it back together. Next jobs are Provent install, ball joint boot, new coolant, temp 2 sensor and Momo steering wheel.

Roads are dry but we still have snow. We had a pretty bad snow storm last week. I had it out a few weeks ago just for 15 min or so you shake down some work I did on it. That has been it though.

Removed cooling flaps fuse and reconnected the cooling flaps motor connector under the hood to keep it clean.

Jumpered the RDK connector to allow for the new wheels and tires.

Cheers

I saw that too...VERY suspect speedo there. You should be well in to the 5k rev range at 260kph (158mph) in an S4...Just looked again, that is not even an S4, that is an S1 car I think (or maybe even a 4.5L car!)... According to the factory numbers it shouldn't even go that fast flat out. I am thinking you have a VERY, VERY optimistic speedo OR you have really changed the gearing and added A BUNCH of power to that car.

I have an 1987 gearbox (G013 I believe). Speedo is optimistic: gps showed about 235kph so it is 25 off at top speed. At lower speeds it is about 15 off. Which is caused by the needle which is not in the correct position at zero speed.
Although a 1984 S2 should do 255kph (when new)!
I will give it a go again next week and go for an early morning ride on the Autobahn. Even on the autobahn you surprise people at these speeds...
As said, it felt like there was more in the engine. If you guys think it should max out at 5000rpm then I should be able to reach much higher speed. I will keep the gps at hand.
And yes, i thought the gearing is different as well because the rpm- speed curves are different from that in the brochure for a 1984 model.
Does a 1987 have taller ratios in 5th gear?

Lol! the only indication of mileage on this car is the faded leather on the steering wheel.
I bought the car without history, it had an exchange instrument cluster, and a failed odometer (rubber gear wheel crumbled when touching it). So, yes I took a chance buying her but i only had to do a lot of smaller jobs to get it going. i could not resist saving her. Amazing car. I replaced the non original mph speedometer with a kph (it is a euro s2), but that had a broken odometer as well. Put it at zero just just to register only my own miles when i fix it.

Leo,

Keep us posted. Yes, an S2 should hit about 155-160 if everything is just right.

Can't help you on the gear box ratio's...

Replaced the drivers side door handle hinge...what a PITA, replaced the fuel filler door, replaced the fuel filler cap, replaced the drivers side drip strip and molding clip. Now I'm repairing the drivers side armrest using the 928 Int'l kit.

I bought my cars a late Christmas present - a nice shiny new Max Jax low-rise hoist.

No more working a few inches in front of my face while lying on my back on cold concrete for me!

Just one thought on the speedo and tach....I would guess the tach needle is also missplaced on the shaft and reading substantially low. I don't have an easy "calibrated" solution for the tach, mine was off substantially on one car and I repositioned it, much better, no longer idles at 0 rpm so to speak, but still wonder how close it is...I need to get an accurate test tach to set it with....or is there a better solution I can use?

i dropped my car off yesterday to have the hatch and drivers door repainted.
The hatch had a 9x9 spot where the clearlcoat was gone, and lots of small spots where it was lifting on the edges.. the door had a very small dent that i kept staring at when i looked at her, so while in the shop.. fix that too.......
