Hi Carl.
Thanks for the heads-up on the new Alpine unit. I was looking at the new Pioneer unit but was not impressed and the Alpine media player is closer to what I want. The chassis is only 3" deep which should solve a LOT of installation problems with the HVAC vacuum pods, relays and other crap under it. The unit also is compatible with Sirius/XM which I like, but I don't understand why there is only 1 USB (in the back) and no Bluetooth! I'll keep an eye on it and Crutchfield has already priced it at $600 instead of the $800 suggested list.....that means you'll probably be able to buy it for under $500 after the first of the year.
Thank you guys, I think I would not know what to do with myself if I let the car go. It is definitely a part of the family
Regarding the 2-DIN, the Pioneer units have more features and inputs, but they are deep, which gives the Alpine unit a leg up with the shallow depth since the 928 console does not have much room to play with. I previously had a Kenwood 2-DIN in my 86.5 and it did fit, with millimeters to spare.
Most likely they will release more models, but the CD-less unit is what I'm looking for as I haven't used a CD in years. I'm currently looking at the Pioneer AVIC model and this Alpine unit, just waiting for the in-depth review of the Alpine unit before I decide.
Carl, I am also waiting to see what the Alpine reviews will be. BTW, if you haven't already, check out pmb692's thread on the 2-din dash/nav mod he's working on. I think its probably the best option I've seen for us to go 2-din without a serious amount of pain.

Hi Paul,
I am following his progress with great interest. It sounds very promising for sure.
Your project was a catalyst and inspiration for me to take on this project. Very nice workmanship.
I have a few days at home in-between training sessions, so I had the glass installer come out today to install the new windshield (http://prosourceglassintl.com/index.html) and the rear hatch glass. The windshield has the correct, larger frit line that hides the dashboard edge. I learned the hard way last time I had a windshield replaced that they are not all the same.
The modified rear cross member from 928 Motorsports for the 6-speed transmission also arrived today and I hope to have that installed tomorrow.
Carl...your effort on this makes mine look like a thrown together mess. I don't see how ANYTHING you have done so far could be any better than it is.
Are the plans still to go with a GM motor?
Hi Dean,
Yes I am still going with the LS engine and 6-speed transmission. As they are non-destructive modifications, the car can be returned to "stock" if needed. Nothing on this car (except the addition of GTS fenders and sunroof delete) can't be easily "un-done" should I ever want to put a stock 928 drivetrain in there (highly unlikely but never say never I guess).
For now, the engine choice is a 6.7 liter LS3, with ported heads, slightly higher lift cam (LS7) while still retaining smooth idle, and a larger intake (FAST), all which I am told by the engine shop should get Hp in the mid-500's minimum.

Hey Tony!
I can't wait!!! Hoping to have it on its wheels in a month or two, then finish up the electrical, make sure lights turn on and off as they are supposed to before getting into the engine and transmission and then off to the paint shop for touchup. So far it looks like it will be a 2015 test drive!
Got some minor items done today. Painted the aluminum cross member pieces in universal aluminum (VHT) and cured them in the oven at 200 degrees (F) for one hour as per instructions. Installed the cross member pieces and upper wishbones with new rubber bushings. The fit and finish of Carl's 6-speed kit is very nice, aluminum pieces come fully media blasted, and the center crossmember piece is nicely powder coated. It installed easily in less than 30 minutes.
Since I was really bored (or is it OCD?) I decided to label all suspension bolts with "OK" after torquing them down with the required torque. At least now there won't be a question if I remember to torque a bolt....
Unfortunately the black color absorbs everything so it is hard to see the black center piece, but it is actually in there
