Jim - interesting.
I just bought a copy of "Australian Sports Car World Quarterly" - the August '77 edition (i.e. they'd been preparing content since the May edition hit the shelves).
The 928 article in it shows a white car with the plate "S - 04714", and the article actually refers to it being a pre-production example. Has a mixture of some colour shots taken by their own photographer, and some of the press pack diagrams/interior shots.
I haven't had time to scan it but will post a PDF of the article at some point.
Hilton.

"S - 04714" plate number style might be temporary plate for Stuttgart area. Those had that kind of layout. Its also likely numbers are red on white backround unlike normal plates.

For the record, I was referring to there being 12 press cars.
I understand there was a myriad of prototypes, some still being built the same time the press cars were.
And preproduction cars were built after the press cars too - like Boomerang Baba's #18 and Rixter's #24.
FWIW, I read some early 928 articles which refer to the press cars as "prototypes".

Number Six in another mag...
Carman 1978 (annual publication?). Looks like a great magazine edition all around. Just can't buy it now as my $ priorities are elsewhere.
Thanks Hilton for finding this!

Located #8... in Norway. Not that is was ever really lost.
Just wanted to let you all know I finally made contact with the elusive Norwegian who owns Number 8, SN 00018.
This nice fella goes by the name Eilif.
He gave me alot of info, and I've invited him to RL.... so hopefully he will post some stuff up about his Silver Press Car.
Thanks!

Do I see side moldings on the snow covered silver car?
+1
If they were black numbers on white, they would be registered to the city of Stuttgart - which is quite unlikely.

ok, let me try:
1. spoiler, but obviously after market;
2. passenger side mirror;
3. rear antenna?
4. rub strips (not sure if that's what we are seeing)

4 Differences are:
Rub strips (side moldings)
Front Spoiler
Euro Side Flashers
Right side Mirror
Beading between bumper and body
Ooops - now we have more than four.

BW photo slides and quick update
I had no visual confirmation of S-CX 2143 at the press launch... until now.
John Rettie (great guy!) was there, and wrote an article for Hot VW, Aug '77.
Editorial note: I know this may appear to be minutia, and it is.
But Porsche said there were 10, Brian Long said there were 11. Looks like there were 12.
PS. John said he will dig thru his negatives to see what he can find!

The are B&W slides. John said he'd going to look around for the color slides.
Thanks man!

I'll be in Michigan this weekend and will have about 3 days to work on the car.
On the list is all fluids flush, fuel hose and tank R&R, LBJ's, and misc.
Will get the seats to Bob @ Classic 9 for re-upholster.
If all is well with the world, I would like to transport the car to Kevin Michael for a original paint rehab.
