'77 ('78) Porsche 928, "Number Six", Preproduction Press Car (Updated 3-18-13)

Quick report, first impressions
Had a great opportunity to look over the car closely over the last couple days.
I have to say Number Six is exceeding my expectations!
So lets start by saying the car is 33 years old...
The best thing is it all there.... even better is the surprise LSD, and a really decent (yet tired) original paint!
Biggest let down would be less salvagable interior vinyl... buy it's really not that bad.
Digging into the maintenance and inspection I was happy to find the car well cared for, at least with general stuff (oil, coolant, tires, even new steering rack).
Drained the fuel tank, gas looked good. Finished the fuel lines. The two front ones were TOUGH!
Coolest part hands-down is all the pre-production stuff! It's really crazy...
Like a lower chassis cross-brace behind the steering rack, and wire harnesses w/ painted color dash marks instead of stripes.
All kinds of things.... too many too list now, but I'm taking alot of pictures.
I'm VERY excited though it may be hard to tell because I'm exhausted.
I catch up with this excursion when I get back home....
In the meantime, here's a few pics I was able to upload yesterday.
No tools... (where did they put the tool kit on early cars?)

Oh yea, If any of you guys have any specific questions, or things you want me to look at on the car...
Ask away here as I'll be working on the car all day tomorrow (today really).
If I can't answer it "on the fly", I take some pics for later.

That paint should polish-out!
Looking forward to more pictures and description.
Did 007 get shipped to England?
This is a time capsule, Jim. Very, very cool. You might need to write a book

James,
A PRO paint detailing and paint restoration expert and lots of PDR.
Its needs some work on the paint all around.... but it's doable.
You know they say it's only original once!
BTW, fired up the car for the first time today, sans fuel leak... and it runs GREAT! It was a thrilling moment for all of us! Video @ 11 + 48 hrs.
PS. Thanks Nick and Dad for all your help today. Had a great time!

So, in semi-summary:
A car shows up on ebay and doesn't sell. ( A car several of us see, talk about, kind of dis a bit.)
A (still) young man, nearly a charter member of rennlist, starts thinking and ciphering a bit.
Calls the owner, makes a reasonable offer.
Connects the dots.
Ends-up with what might be the oldest 928, not just in North America, but in the world.
Engages the guys who were there, on site, invited for the 1977 reveal. Gets their stories and even their portfolios of photographs
And, the best part, its been "cared for".
The ultimate survivor.
And has a new guy, young guy, up there in Michigan documenting and caring for the car.
I like it.

I urged him to join today. Maybe one of our youngest @ 13 years.
He's been following "un-officially" (read lurking) for some time now.
I think he likes your BLUE82, James.
And your right, man..... doesn't get much better. This has been a great vacation!
And in Michigan in the Winter, of all places.

May be the first time anyone said that about Michigan this time of year! LOL!
He probably likes my Avatar...he is 13 after all!!! (just remembering how I was at 13...it is the AVATAR FOR SURE! Tell him there is a whole calendar of that stuff out there!)

I am happy that some work is finally happening to it. I can't wait to see it done, even though it is going to be a LONG time. I am really new to cars, I know lots about snowmobiles and ATV's. I still have a lot to learn. I would like to get a 928 in a few years, but I can't picture me hauling a trailer behind it with a quad on it Or in 12" of snow. I think a Subaru WRX would be better for winter conditions here.

Good Instincts
Jim was dead-on when he was thinking about this car.
This is from a note he sent out about 5 months ago (hopefully he won't mind me sharing it) ---
"This may be a seriously significant car for many reasons.
We are talking about the sixth post-prototype 928 ever built, worldwide! It was used for press purposes, so it may have a pictorial history not yet discovered.
All of this is very interesting to me."
