Only thing really suprising so far is the mention of the cable speedometer, didn't find that in mine.

Butch,
Thanks for chiming in, man. I like your attitude! Reads like you've been digging in for a couple years, whereas I'm just getting started.
Show u some pics of your 57 when you get a chance.

Wasn't sure about the cable driven speedo (hence the ?), but knew '78 speedos were different for some reason. Let us know if you know why.

Feel free to share further your early 928 experience here.

The speedometer on mine is electric. I've not heard of any being cable-driven. I'm not aware of any significant differences in 78-86 speedometers.

Jim,
Just finished a dash/pod rehap filling all the cracks in the vinyl dash and pod and texturing. Don't believe either had been removed before, the pod was interesting, metal base structure had clearly been mechanically press formed but looks the final shape was refined with a hammer before the outer vinyl shell was applied. Found a sticker inside that said "jun 77" so probably original but I still didn't fine any evidence of a mechanical speedo or a route to get a cable from the tranny, but I will take a look underneath and see if I can find any evidence. I believe the center vent in mine has a vertical slot but the damper looks to be designed for a push/pull will have to work on that one. One question is the quarter window trim on yours black or stainless, mine look to be stainless badly painted black?

Butch,
Interesting stuff!

The ealier car's trim is anodized which was later changed to powercoated (83-84?). The anodizing fades.

I'm not sure I know what you mean.

Have you noticed whether or not your interior door and quarter panels substrates are pressure-formed plastic or partical board?

Jim,
On my 78 (784) the door panels are particle board.

Jim,
I don't believe the speedo has always been mechanical on mine, think I will leave it alone, it works. The door panels and quarter panels are molded particle board, currently have a door panel off recovering it. The center vent has a vertical slot on the left side(except I think it is upside down, that would make it the rt. side), looks like for a slide lever for a later model, guessing it has been replaced by PO, enough other stuff has been screwed up. Looking at the PET the damper connecting bracket or gear are missing, it should be like yours. Thanks for the info on the quarter trim will have to strip one and see what is underneath, can't hurt it anything, finish is totally different on the hatch glass trim.

In ROW 0221 they are plastic.

Jim,

The trim was originally black. The rear quarter window trim fades. SEM makes an OEM paint - comes in a spary can as well as in pints and quarts. The texture and color of the OEM black is a perfect match for the 928.

I have never seen any door panels in plastic. They all seem to be particle board. There is a guy on eBay that forms blanks from plastic. The rear quarters for the early cars are plastic and well worth getting as they do not warp.

Default Car Graphic May 1977 (Japan)

I found Number Six in a Japanese car mag, Car Graphic, May '77.
It's not on the cover (Lotus), but heads up the first page of an interesting looking article which I can't read.

Better-more, I've identified another preproduction 928 - S-CX 2133
I updated post 4 to reflect this.

I've counted at least 9 preproduction cars at the press launch...
- 3 red
- 4 white
- 1 silver
- 1 blue

Default Ho Ho Ho!

Santa was good to me this year with this 928 press kit.
This was given to all the journalists at the press launch and by the press department (public relations).
It's really comprehensive! There's a ton of real B&W photos & graphs.
I will scan it all in when I have a chance, and post it here.

Merry Christmas everyone and thanks for all your support and encouragement on this project!

Big congrats on acquiring this vehicle and kudos to your noble plans of full restoration, Jim.
Love the press kit. A perfect companion to this vehicle.

Jim,
Here's a pretty cool prestige brochure for the 78.

http://cgi.ebay.com/1978-Porsche-928...item5632ff8898

I picked up one a while back. Not expense and pretty cool!!
