If your transmission gets ruined by putting it in "PARK" then there is a whole hell of a lot more wrong with your car...

Glad it didn't get damaged any worse...

I have a great solution for you. In an automatic - Use the freaking part pawl because it keeps your car from moving when you aren't in it. Don't listen to idiot-induced internet lore regarding "wearing out" a parking pawl.

These cars roll 6 inches or so when engaging the pawl. And its built to resist lockup during driving.

But tow one with it in park--- that'll cost you.

Remember my episode trying to repair the avatar car?
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ted-issue.html

When all was said and done, I had to buy another transmission to transplant.

OK, I'll engage PARK from now on. After phoning up lots of scrappies and racking up a HUGE phone bill I've found a pure white front bumper for £175! Sounds like a lot but in a 200 mile radius of my house that was the ONLY 928 Bumper! I filled the Xantia up with a full tank of petrol earlier tonight so I'll head out early tomorrow to go the 90 miles to collect it.

That sounds dirt cheap to me for a front bumper cover on a 928! Ya'll must be giving 928's away over there in GB! Holy crap! You couldn't touch on in the states (or from the sounds of it Down Under either) for anything close to that!

You may need the bumper shocks as well.

OK so how does the MC reservoir come loose?? esp with the metal bracket holding it in position??

There must be other damage for this to occur??

Dont ever not use the park position when you leave the driver seat for any reason, there you have been told on the intranetz.........

Turn the wheels into the curb, sometimes I even let the car roll until the tire touches the curb.
Set the hand brake, slightly release the brake pedal to see if it holds.
Leave it in gear on a manual, or P in a automatic.
Not only sound advice, but I _believe_ that in many cities, including San Francisco, this is the law, and you can getta ticket if the meter maid is in an unusually foul mood that day....or of its a few days after the once or twice a year runaway car/truck that didnt do this.

[QUOTE=928Forever!;7874049]

Why did this happen to me !?

Because [as we would say in Yorkshire] you were a "Dozy P*llock son"!

You are going to give us Brits a bad name in front of our colonial cousins.

All joking apart, sorry to hear of your misfortune- it can happen to anyone and let's hope no structural damage has been done.

You will need to ensure nothing bent/twisted up front. The bumper bar under the cover will absorb impacts up to about 15 or 20 mph [cannot remember the exact number maybe it is 15 to 20 km/hr].

As stated earlier the bumper shocks may well have taken a hit and I am somewhat intrigued as to how the brake fluid reservoir took off- never heard of that one before. I hit a wall at around 70 mph in my late 90 S4 five years ago and my brake reservoir did not come off [just about everything else did mind you including my head!].

If you have a white 928 [you do not tell us what type/colour of 928 you have] you may have lucked out otherwise a paint job. Unless you can do it yourself sounds like you are staring at a 1k sterling bill if you are lucky.

I am at a loss as to why the handbrake let go- the 928 system is just about the best of its kind I have ever seen. If it was a gentle gradient is there a possibility you forgot to engage it as you dashed into the shop or whatever to beat the parking attendent fascists? Easily done.

If you are on a steep hill and you use the P position [as you should every time you stop] I tend to hold the car on the foot brake and very very gently release it until the gearbox stop inches into position then pull on the handbrake. If you let this happen harshly then it may well cause mechanical damage.

On steep hills I always turn the front wheel so that it will roll into the curb [assuming there is one] if the system fails.

Best wishes for a speedy and not too expensive recovery.

check the brake shoes on the park brake most of the cars i have seen around here the brake material falls off the shoe itself(rust) and the P brake only kinda works after that untill all the brake material finally falls off then there is no P brake at all

I checked and all the rest of the body is fine. Just needs the new bumper cover. As for the reservior the bold holding the tank in place was loose by the looks of it and gave way, though it never got damaged, just needed a new bolt to put it back into place and bleed the system. I got the bumper fitted 20 minutes ago and she looks as good as new . However I think the O/S track rod end has taken a bit of a shunt as it wanders a bit on the road. However I'll get that checked later, I'm just glad to have the car running and driving again!! As for the hill it was a very steep one, and I did remember to engage the hand brake. However after checking the drums they are very very worn and are greasy/oily inside so that's why they didn't grip. I got another set from the scrap yard for £20 each so that problem is sorted.

Pulled the hand brake on and put it in N (because some people have told me putting a lot of strain on the P pin can damage the gearbox if you are on a steep hill even with the hand brake asisting it), car didn't even creak when I got out. Perfect I thought...

Came out of the shop and my 928 was at the bottom of the hill with the front bumper wedged in a pavement (side walk)...

Plus it was a main road it was stuck on so it was stopping one lane of traffic...

Luckily only the bumper was damaged but even just that will be expencive won't it ?

Why did this happen to me !?

My question is - do the S4 928's have dual rear brakes ? (E.G a disk for driving and a drum for parking)

If so this shouldn't have happened, if it is just a disk for both jobs it must have gotten hot when driving and expanded, put the hand brake on, disk cooled down and contracted, and the brake was useless.

I didn't manage to drive the car home as in the shunt the brake fluid reservior got knocked off it's brackets and the fluid all leaked out...

All I can say is I'm glad my other Porsche is going to be on the road soon since my 928 isn't
well your worring abotu yoru little pin just cost your ins company a lot of money. You left it in "N" really? come on. Im sorry.. This was a bone-head move.
