Default Parking Pawl Repair + Unexpected issue

Some pictures below will illustrate the parking pawl failure + collateral damage.

(Update 12 years later...I aborted the repair and did a swap instead..am resurrecting to show pics and links)

On reassembly, I intend to go sans one bolt, and have threaded that hole for a plug bolt to contain the transmission fluid. (yellow circle) I think it will work. Have nothing to lose at this point. Plus, it was already broken and not leaking into the diffy, so I give it an 80% chance of working.

(For anybody else going into the tranny, ATB's thread was very instructive: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ld-thread.html )

just make sure that the radial seals are both flush with the inter plate and that you use new radial seals and O rings on the output shaft and the I plate, otherwise you will be doing this again.
Did you find the broken tab???
What was the connection to the housing holding the governer?? will the gov housing spin without the rear of the bolt housing in there??

Thanks for that, Stan.

Just installed new seals per your instruction. They are back-to-back single lip seals (springs face outward). You need two, and they are 999 113 307 40, (not included in either Tranny seal kit 126-270-530-00 or Diffy seal kit). In the housing, located between them is a groove and drain hole. Looks like that way any T-fluid or D-fluid that pass their respective seals can drain out of the case.

The big O-ring 999-701-743-40 for the intermediate plate is not part of the tranny kit, it comes as part of the Diffy & axle seal kit # 960-302-901-00, Which includes the axle seals, axle flange O-rings and the rear diffy cover gasket.

Am working on the 84, in case I didn't mention it.

Now, switching ends of the transmission for a while. Going in. Primary target is the Reverse friction/steel stack. Any tips? Do I need to release the circlip from the diffy end of the tranny to pull the shaft?

Dredging this thread up to illustrate inner arrangement of parking pawl.

FYI, Ultimately I aborted this repair. Case was damaged and I didnt have enough confidence in my ability to reassemble the rest of the innards.

Instead, I swapped in a replacement transmission from an S4 that maryland rennlister KCCampro sold me for about $100. That works great to this day.

Wow!
The damage to the case was clearly from the broken off chunk of the park pawl, since that bolt has nothing to do with the mechanism.

I would think that the only way to do this would be to "hit" the car when parked.
I doubt that the pawl could engage the "wheel" when moving....
