I know someone made a 3.09 ring and pinon sets a while back..... I think all ring-pinons work in any 928 transmission....or are they specific to 5 speed vs auto etc?

Does anyone still sell these gears?

Brian - The auto "ring and pinion" are very different between the auto and manual. The manual's pinion is technically part of the main shaft where all the gears sit, and the automatic has the pinion bolted the main automatic assembly.

i have a 3.09 in the gts. don't know exactly where it came from but it was installed in the original build in the 90's. if you're looking for one i might consider trading.

I believe John Kim Crumb was involved with the original group purchase about 20 years ago at that time they were very expensive ! One mechanic who installed one was NOT happy with the tolerances....as he tried to shime the ring and pinion as he rotated it 90 degrees it would move way in and out ! So he just averaged it out but it was not quiet running. And the few they made were for the 5 speeds.

bummer...it appears its a 5 speed only thing.....so the only option I have is a 2.54 89 box..which is pricey!

Other than first gear, not much change at all.

especally when bolting it into a GTS. It becomes an S2 2.2 transmission with a super low 1st gear. (what this means is all the gear ratios become the same as the S4, but now you dont have 5th gear, but gain a superlow 1st)

I just love the fact that some really liked the performance of the 3.09, when in actuallity, they were fixated on what numerical gear they were in, and not the speeds and rpm.

It does multiply torque.

It's like how a louder exhaust makes the car faster. "More exciting?" that's different and still worthwhile.

If it's not a drag car then it's not a clear win.

I did do a simulation of running the main straight at BIR (over a mile) with a 2.2 instead of the 2.75 I've got now. Because of the different shift points down the strip I'll be losing 0.1 sec if I swap trannies.

It ALL multiplies torque. . The point is, its the final ratios that count, not the big multiplier, the final drive 3.09. The change in ratios is a rounding error, as seen by your .1 sec you calculate down the strip for a fairly large change in rear end ratios. PLUS, this is totally HP dependent as well. change that hp that your car has up or down and that difference will change as well. quite a few factors. A better example, a 2.2 makes it around laguna the best from 300 to 400rwhp, but lower or higher, the 2.75 would be a better choice.
