Default In search for 1985-87 5.0 (100k miles plus)

As the title says, i am in search for a 5.0 liter 928 if my 951 sells next weekend. While i have a few cars i am looking at, i am still looking for the best one.

So if you are aware of nice high mileage 928 with a 5.0 , please post the link or PM me.

My budget is $7k, while i understand that narrows down what type of cars i can own, i still believe it is possible to find a nice S4.

I just missed an 86.6 5 speed with polished turbo twist for $4500 bucks.

Thanks jpc

Okay-this car is an '89 (out of range I know) but well in your budget-it has an auto:

This car is high mileage but well maintained and in need of little relative to mileage.

I am interested in 88 and 89 models, but i have never seen one for less than $10k

thanks jpc

I think Kyle's is still available. Uncommon color and very well maintained.

One car i have been monitoring, but the car Mick brought up is very interesting. Mileage is not a big thing to me as-long as the car is in decent shape. I love working on all sorts of Porsches.

thanks jpc

Forgot the names of the fellow. Bob I think. Since it's author deleted it has probably sold.

There is also a nice 1989 S4 in Naples, FL that I am probably passing on.

The issues are noted:

Mick,

PM me where it is posted on the Naples Porsche dealer. I could not locate the car. I love the color, but the price to me seems high.

thanks and how are you finding all these high mileage 928's?

I am searching the standard spots, autotrader, auto rv, cars, renn, pelican and local papers, but i have not seen any of these cars.

thanks and look forward to your PM.

cheers

What makes people think that 100k is high miles on 20+ year old cars? I tend to think that my 170k mile car is still pretty low miles.

I use craiglook.com to search all of craigslit (and it save searches). Best search I've found-some lag.

I use ebay

I use Autotrader

I use cars.com

Very nice looking car. I don't think its worth $9k, if the motor goes you would be in for atleast another $2k minimum for a good used engine. Of course a good used in is a shot in the dark as-well. I purchased a car from Florida and it was sun baked.

The consensus in the thread about it is that it isn't worth $9k.. I'd be tempted to aim at $6.5k if the AC doesn't work, and when they say "it just needs re-gas" tell them you'll give them $7.5k if the AC works after they re-gas it and the engine's warmed up. It also needs engine mounts (easy but time-consuming DIY job)

They're not going to get much interest in a car that by domestic standards is high-miles, and shows rust on one of the two parts on the car that traps mud (the other being in rear of the driver's side back wheel well - behind the tank filler neck - but that spot rarely rusts unless badly hit in the rear quarter).

Also curious why you think the motor might go? The only significant risk factor at that mileage is thrust bearing failure - easily checked-for before handing over cash. That mileage isn't high by european-delivered 928 standards - its actually pretty average Lots of higher-mileage 928's around on the original head gasket and rings, and documented rebuilds showing tolerances still within factory-new after 200k miles.

The front and back air work perfect, so they claim. They replaced a faulty radiator. They replaced plugs, points, cap and coil. I did ask them to check the tolerances, and again, going purely on trust, they did say it was within tolerance.

The paint on the rear looks to be original but I think Northeast US and Florida salt have taken their toll.

The car in OK City is back and now down to $5500! But-I'm bad---it's a 1987. Also I can't believe I forgot his name: Michael

http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/cto/1696742978.html

I'd jump on it. Only needs a few things (for now).

Realistically most cars go to heaven after 150k miles. I realize most Porsche's get extra car by most folks, but to think a car will last much past 150k is a tough sale. I understand how well the 928 are built.

Example, a 911 SC will go 300k plus miles, but it will be DOG slow.

Now on the dealer carforsale. I would assume they paid 3500-4k for the car. Why do you ask, they are always looking for a home run sale! But, so would I. Who would not....

Its going to be a tough sale for the florida region. I can't imagine anyone wanting a high mileage Porsche without a warranty. Unless its me, LOL!

I would offer less than $6500, unless they included the shipping fee's. Dealer also get a discount on shipping. I moved a car from Florida for $180 bucks to Indiana with a dealer discount of shipping.

I like both cars, and might jump on either one of them if my carsales in a few days.

Thanks guys for the update! Cheers!
