Default Thunderhill SCCA race April 10th 2010 season opener

Against all my better judgement, im taking the new racer out for a test drive, and it just happens to be a race. However, I do have 1000miles on it of street driving , if that counts for anything.

Im probably not able to make practice, so it will be qualifying and then race on Saturday. I barely have front tires left, but hopefully they will last a few sessions, as I never had the time to build up the fixed rims and do the fender mods to make them fit as well.
so, it will be a fairly stock stroker racer, with only the kicktail wing for aero. It will be interesting to see how it handles with no aero vs the Holbert set up.

practice friday 8:30
qual 1Pm
Saturday, race at 8:30

Glad to see you gettin back in the saddle with the "Holbert tribute car" Gotta do a shake down race at some point why not now?
What happened to the wing? Did it go with the Holbert car?
Hell that was a good dumpster wing.

Thanks! I think you are right!

The wing wont go on until I get the spitter made up. I did that before and it made for a pushy car. But, the rear kicktail set at 10 degrees seems to give some rear bite.

Yeah , that wing was the find! I just saw one on the race board going for about $3k used! it didnt get hurt in the crash.

Kick some butt and show them what a good driver can do behind the wheel of a 928! What does a stock stroker race mean? Is your engine stroked or are you running a 5.0L?

I talked to MK yesterday.......practice went well....he is happy with how the car is handling and got a good lap time without really pushing at 2:01....so he is only a bit off pace of the Holbert cars best time at 1:59.8.....with a bit more tuning it will be there.......

Mk commented that with the "lack" of aero the car is more "loose" and he likes it...a bit nerve racking...but fun!!!

Just got off the phone with MK

Race went well...car ran great...finished 5th......the field is MUCH tougher now.... the boosted S2000, Viper Comp Coupe, Turbo RX7 and LS7 RX7 all finished ahead of MK..... Oddly enough the wicked Mustang and TT NSX were not there..... With 1:55 or better times.... it takes a $ERIOUS committment to keep up!!!!!

NASA GTS sounds better and better......

Thanks Guys!

What a weekend. That was a blast. Glad I did it.

The new replacement 928 racer was amazing. it was exactly the same as the holbert car, less the aero mods, (and some decent tires ) .
practice, out of the box, without ever even seeing a track, or even a mountain road, it ran a 2:03. Then, in qualifying, without even anything changed, since the car was assembled and dialed in, it runs a 2:01.1. Even more amazing, I run the race, fairly conservative, and it runs 2:01.xx and lasts the entire race without a hickup. !!!!!!!!! In practice we had a 40mph tailwind, and I was seeing speeds of 140+mph down the main straight, which Ive never come close to before, in all the years of going there. Thought it was a speedo difference, because this is a new chassis. however, in the race, it was 8:30 am, cold and dry and down the main straights, I was back to the normal 130mph range, and dragging the compcoupe down the straight, was just like I was before. (it slightly pulls on me from off the turn to the end by about a car length.) Amazing that a 40mph tail wind could cause that kind of top speed.

so, the power is there, chassis is good, car is solid, it just looks a little rough.
(but that will change with paint and some other mods). I have to get the bumper out of the rear, replace the side glass with lexan, build up my rims with the parts I have and mount up some good tires, after fixing the fenders up for the width.

all in all, a great race weekend, and even better that I left after 1 race as the guys are running today in race 2, and its raining! . I figure, the 50lbs of weight, no wing or splitter, and old toyos, plus cold track temps and 120 degree tire temps, should be worth the 1 to 1.5 seconds off my best time with the holbert car, PLUS, it ran the 305s up front as well. (vs 275s up front).
Next race, hopefully, laguna.

Yes the field is not the fast and furious crowd. turbo NSX, s2000, STi, Rx7, some with V8, LS3s, and Randy who was there with his new LS7 engine and jerico gear box, will be back when he fixes his oil blow by, overflow, and oil pressure issues. (sound familar guys? he had a horible weekend, after spending big bucks getting all the new stuff on the camaro)

I got video, rear view, fender cam and in car from qual and race.

The car is back!!

Thanks 928brothers, couldnt have done it without you guys, especially Mark Anderson at 928 intl', with all his help!

Here are some pics. saw a Panarama turbo at the track, so couldnt resist doing a blast from the past comparison. my little guy on the track with his bike at turn8. (105mph slidey turn ), and some guy that crashed his transam car, just like my wreck, but he was lucky he didnt break both legs. very ugly, makes you think about the advantage of running non tube frame racers.

Mark

PS. By the way cornerbalanced the car too, while at the track because they have that level test area. as expected, almost perfect based on my normal set up specs.
even front side to side and light one corner (gas tank side). 2 turns lowering the heavy corner and it was almost perfect for cross weights. 2980lbs with me in the car, and 3 gals of gas. after the 60lbs taken out (rear bumper, side windows, and door panels that I left in , it will be 2920. I think the cage is about 20lbs heavier
