928 Racing Wide Body Kit
READ LATER POSTS FOR PRICES - As some of you may already know, I've been developing a '91GT for road racing. Part of that process included finding a way to get wider tires and wheels on the car without destroying the basic lines of the 928, which I wanted to preserve. I was also concerned that racing the car ultimately means contact with solid objects, so I wanted to be able to easily replace damaged body parts. I needed a splitter for better ground effects and better air flow to the radiator and oil coolers. I also wanted the front fenders to seemlessly join with the rear fenders via a rocker skirt. Finally, I needed a wing that would be durable and effective and not cost $1,500 or more.
When I first met Greg and Matt Benson (Benson Bros. Racing) in Carson City, Nevada, I was just looking for some basic suspenson help. After seeing their personal race cars (not Porsches) and the prototype for the 2010 Camaro GT 1 cars they were starting to build, I worked my *** off to get them interested in my project. I wouldn't say they both ran out and got their own 928s, but they were more than impressed with the beauty and capability of the car once they got behind the wheel. They soon agreed that there might be a market for the same thing that I wanted. The project began last summer and the molds have now been produced. My car still has the steel rear fenders that were used to create the mold.
.
Most recently we had the car at PIR in Phoenix, just to see what people thought of the appearance of the car and to shake down the new body parts. The car did very well on both accounts, except for a very minor tire rub due to some overlooked footwell metal sticking out. The 914, 944 & 964 guys all liked it. A few of the 911 guys even had nice thing to say, if you can believe it.
We will have it next at Spring Mountain in Pharump, NV at a Porsche club event Feb 27-28. It then goes in for some tweeking and minor repairs (I hope they're minor) and off to finish paint (single stage black). It will then be seen in Reno and a motorsports show on March 12-14.
What we now have is a car with 335 x 30 x 18s (Toyo R888s) on 12" wide Forgeline WX3Rs and no spacers. The offset is the same front and back, allowing for front to rear rotation. The rear track is about 76" and the front is about 78". The rear wing will be fully adjustable once we complete some higher speed testing of the mount in the 190mph range.
So, for now we're just testing the waters to see how much interest there might be for such a kit. Pricing for the wing should be under $800, in primer. The front splitter should be less than $600. Once the splitter is installed, replacement of the ABS and rubber parts is cheap. We're not ready to price out the other parts yet, but will be soon. Forgeline wheels are also available at great prices and a custom Speedway sway bar has been fabricated for the front.

Larry,
It looks GREAT! Love it! Can't wait to see it all painted up... I need those rockers for my race car! They probably would not be a direct bolt on for my application (because my front fenders are quite different) but it would certainly be better than what I have now I bet!
Going with 12" fronts and rears and matching tires is a GREAT IDEA! That is what I do w/ my race car too!

Is there a link to a website with higher res pics? Hard to see much detail in the ones provided. Looks very cool though.

Hi Larry and welcome. Looks like a very nice mod. I live just down the hill from you in Carson City. I have been at the Benson Bros shop and they really are a couple of nice guys. I went in to inquire about corner balancing my car and ended up there for over an hour while I got the tour of the shop. Are you aquainted with Tim and Cheryl? They are 928 enthusiasts from your side of the lake and are really into open road racing. Let me know if you would like to meet up sometime to say hello and talk 928's. Good luck with the project.

Looking great Larry!!! 76" wide in the rear is about the same as the widow...but it only was 71.5" wide in the front..... Do you know the offsets of the 12" wide wheels.....the widow ran 18x12x8.25" backspacing..but does have a spacer on it...I'm not sure the size, but it might be 15-25mm
I'm wondering how having a wider front track effects the handling? I know wider also makes the front effectively lower, which is good....
Hopefully I can see you at some trackdays this year.....

Larry originally built this 928 as an ORR car & used the Beast as a guide...except for the 650HP LS7.... This 928 is stunning & very nice in person...I saw it at a track day last year.....sounds great too here is a link to some other photos before the widebody
