I posted these pics on another thread here, but it has not been commented on yet and as I thought about it later today, I thought this might actually be the best "supercar" replacement for the 928...though WAY out of the $20k range right now, but give it a few more years and I bet they will be in the $30k range!

I think this car has some of the sexiest looks of any car today (though they may not age as gracefully as the 928's lines have), the car is FAST, has a BEAUTIFUL interior (I especially like the Piano black trim in these cars) and the rear seats are ACTUALLY useful!

Here is the Maserati GranTurismo:

Quattroporte's are also a raging bargain these days if you needed a shockingly affordable alternative to an M5 sedan...

I think I just fell in love, good gawd that black looks good.

EDIT, I can see it with out the cutouts on the side, all the chrome gone, blacked out, it would look good with no door handles, tint so dark your mama would not know ya, black chrome wheels.

I better stop, before something comes up.

To late for me! This car in dark colors is UNREAL! Drive one and they will have to pry you out of it! Trust me, they are AMAZING!!! You can find really nice one owner '08's with less than 20k miles for $75k...maybe less! Not bad for a car that sold new for close to $140k!

I found one that was black metallic and all I could think of was putting a little subtle front and rear under body "spoiler" and then a little add on spoiler on the trunk that are raw carbon fiber and then driving the HELL out of it! Hell, it was so comfortable I might sleep in the damn thing!

Ok, Ok...I know I am going WAY OT here... This car is "buy it now" for $100k about the point of this $20k supercar thread, but I just can't help myself. As much as I like the black metallic...THIS would be MY CAR if I had the money today! SERIOUSLY...this is SICK!

Are the '07+ Gran Turismo's hugely better than the '02-'06 Coupes? They can be had for $30K all day long. IIRC that generation of the auto trannies sucked, but hey, there's a Ferrari 360 motor in there and I think they could be had as a 6-speed. Probably cheaper to buy a used Coupe than a replacement longblock from Ferrari. Too bad about the 1993 Prelude tail lights.

^^^^Mas GT's and Qp's are getting dumped because of the horrid transmission issues that end up being 1000's plus everytime the car hits the shop. Some never seem to be repaired. A girlfriend just had her 08 bought back from Mas because it never did get sorted

The OP wrote Inexpensive Super Cars. I can't believe he meant supercar. Meaning find me a super (good) car for 20k. supercars are top performers with but a few close in specs.

The only thing 90% of the cars everyone has listed have in common are insane maintenance costs. Jaguar and Lotus are kings. Older Ferrari's will kill someone with a 20k car budget. Don't bother. Jump to the 348's, 355's and Tr's and make sure you have 5k a year set aside for them minimum.

20k buy a Toyota Supra or another older 911. At least you know what you are getting into. A Lotus could be $5k for a small fix if you can find someone that knows how to fix em.

Sorry to hear about the Masers tranny issues...that is very sad...they are SO BEAUTIFUL! I'll have to check in w/ my buddies at WCD and see what problems they have had...they drive the hell out of that car.

Rob, the '08 GranTourismo's are HUGELY different from what came before. More different I think than an OB 928 to a GTS even!

h20skier, if the cars listed below your post are currently in your stable, will you adopt me?! I am potty trained and come with a nice collection of 928's and guns! LOL! You have some AWESOME cars listed there! Drove the 430 Scud w/ WCD at the same time I drove the Maser and that car was SICK FAST!!! The shifts (and I was not even in race mode) were MIND BENDING! I can't even imagine what the new Italia or even the California are like! Hats off to you on that collection, eclectic and spectacular I would say!

I had a friend that had a QuattroPorte that sold it because of the F1 transmission, and clutches issues. THe car had only 30k and had have the trans repaired twice in that timeframe.

Yes, the Maserati/Ferrari F1 transmission is prone to problems. One of the guys in our local car club bought one. He kept it for about 6 months and then sold it because it had an ailing transmission and a leaking head gasket. But those cars are drop dead gorgeous. I lusted after that car everytime I saw it.

As for the OP's original question. I think the answer is becoming increasingly clear. You cannot get a true supercar for $20k. Unless maybe you were to take a 5 speed 928 S4 which can be found for pretty cheap money these days. Then add alot of boost. My preference would be Kuhn's twin turbo system. That would put you pretty close to the $20k mark and give you a car that would outperform most high end cars available today. It would be in a a classic styled body that still looks modern with a new set of wheels. That is my answer. Kuhn Twin Turbo 928 S4.

Ha! The C32 AMG I just bought has a plug instead of a dipstick for engine and transmission. The actual dipstick is a "special tool" that you have to get from the dealer. WTF...

Mb's have not had a dipstick in a while, we have one in the shop right now that is throwing codes for over full/under full all kinds of codes for the panel.

They did save that 2 oz of weight by not putting the dipstick in, it only added four pounds of electronics.

Progress my ***.

Those Maseratis need some better seats. I would probably be thrown around pretty good if I ever tried to exert it on the street or track.

Mas and Fer F1's are two totally different animals. I've driven many Mas's and own a few Fer, not even close. The tranny issues are horrible I agree. The QP's are really nice looking but that's it. They are pigs. Slow rollers into corners with brakes you can't have faith in. I've got a few friends with the new GTS's and they seem to be happy so far again a great looking car. Unfortunately it's an expensive game if you pay 140k for a car and it's in the shop 3 months a year. Add the massive depreciation curve and you have a candle burning both ends.

pcar928fan those are currently in the barn
