I just installed a set of Ken's chips in my otherwise-stock 85, and I have to say- they are amazing! I did as he suggested, and put in an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and the difference is very noticeable. My car has a 2:75 rear end and close ratios, and now 1st and 2nd are wheelspin city even with 285's! Yee-haa! Drifto-matic! This is a GAS!
I'm waiting a bit to put in the chip. A few more basic issues I need to work out from a maint. standpoint. Get your x-pipe yet? Roger states its a bunch of bolt on hp in the 85's. Must say I agree wholly. Gotta dump the cats tho.
What adjustable regulator did you install? I have an 85 Auto that I finally installed the Porken chip in this past week. I've had the chip setting around for probably 6 months waiting for a few other items I wanted to finish up first. It feels like I have better throttle response and noticeably better part throttle power, and though the full throttle may be a bit better it isn't glaringly more powerful. As a side benifit it seem like I picked up 1 or 2 MPG. Of course an adjustable fuel pressure regulator may rectify that.

Steve has upgraded both the ignition (EZF'r) and fuel chip (LH2²r/55) to go along with the higher fuel pressure (58 psi cold). He already had an AFPR, but you can use a stock '87 S4 FPR with the upgraded fuel chip.
It sounds like you have just the v1.0 EZF'r chip. (Final version is v2.0, which is a free upgrade, and features several improvements.)
An AFPR with stock/AutoThority fuel chip can only make more torque (higher FP), or more hp (lower FP), but not both.
Yes, I did both chips and the fuel pressure reg.- I have a set of 928 Int'l headers to finish up and install to complete this package, but just the chips made a noticeable difference.. Throttle response is crisp, and part-throttle drivability is better. Especially noticable when the car is warmed up and heat-soaked. It used to be a bit lazy when hot, but its not anymore...
I know the exhaust will be very beneficial- can't wait to get that going.....
Any guesses as to hp increase? Would have loved to have seen the before/after dynos.
Not sure anyone has done a dyno of just the chips/FPR increase over previous, but I saw one that shows about 36hp for the chips/FPR/Crossovers.
I think 928MS claims 26hp for the crossovers, so that means you get another 10 or so from the chips/FPR and more area under the torque curve as well.
I'm hoping to go to the dyno this winter and that will show a pretty good comparison. I dyno-ed 292 rwhp with the crossovers and AA chips this past summer (with high flow cats and stock '85 2-into 1-into 2 cat-back setup).
The only difference will be the chips/FPR when I take it back so we'll see in a couple of months unless someone else gets there first.
I have dyno sheet from Devek, so I will try and get a new number before installing the exhaust, as I am curious also. Ken's dyno sheets pretty well tell the tale- its not so much a huge HP increase, as area below the curve in torque and HP both, so its something you feel every time drive- whether its at WOT or not...
On a slightly damp road, I was getting part-throttle wheelspin in 3rd gear- way before I had the pedal floored. This didn't happen before, on the same road and the same day. Surprised the hell out me! Goose it a little to see how it felt, and Boom!-sideways! Yikes! That kind of throttle response was not there before- 3rd gear was pretty safe in the wet. Not anymore! I Like It. It may kill me, but I like it!
I had done some acceleration tests, timing from 50-80 in 3rd, so I was trying to retest when I discoveres it was impossible due to wheelspin. Try again when its dry....and hope for more wheelspin...hehehe.
Forgot to mention, I asked Ken for the 9000 rpm version, and I figure about 517 hp at that rpm....
Just kidding! But it does run really well between 4500 and 6500, and the flat spot at around 3500 is much less abrupt. Really worthwhile upgrade for these S3's..
Definitely up there with crossovers for best bang for your buck. A great combination too.
For anyone planning this though, you should make sure that your car is running well and that your fuel lines are all in good shape too. The increased fuel pressure could potentially cause a leak where the stock pressure might have been fine. Also your fuel injector O-rings should be in good shape.
Where else can you add this much performance in an afternoon with easily reversible bolt-on power adders? Nowhere.
I told Ken I had the same problem svp did: I've pulled out of a few places on dry pavement and eased on the gas only to hear my tires chirping or feel the back end start to go on me. My tires are fine, the "Problem" is the new power. I honestly don't think I'd want much more than this for street driving. I can't imagine what it's like driving a forced induction 928, but it must be SCARY!
Last week I was accelerating to merge onto a highway at about 45-50mph and as I let the clutch out at the bottom of 3rd I got a nice little slide going. I just giggled, but I bet the guy behind me was a little surprised.
