4.0.2 is pretty much it...

I don't have a S3 5-speed anymore, so I can't make major changes anymore (thank goodness ).

Ken

Finally got my car running after sitting in garage for 8 months. My MAF wire harness was bad (wires completely bare ) and I think was the cause of the LH computer failure (maybe on burnoff). See link to photo of the LH below. Replaced the computer with a spare I had and swapped your chips back in. I had Kevin rebuild the MAF (he stated when he plugged it in it caused a bad smell in his entire shop - something burned). The car would not run properly with the rebuilt unit (would not run past idle, missed badly). I put on the spare MAF I had (condition not known). THe car started right up and is not running bad, but not as good as I believe it could. See photo of damaged LH with white stuff comming form the red box on the bottom LH board.

The car has version 3.5 and X pipe, 5-speed. I have a O2 meter that indicates lean running at start (SoCal AM so not real cold, meter at 15.5 or so) then then when warm between 14.0 and 14.5. I adjusted MAF with O2 connected when running hot to 14.5. Its also lean at WOT (I checked WOT at LH harness and it checks) - running at 14.4 or so.

I am going to order your v4 chips and have Kevin look at both of my MAFS but here are my questions.

1. Can I set idle mixture with my wide band O2 meter in the car and if so, what is process? DO I disconnect factory O2 and jump A/B?
2. What do I set the idle O2 to, 14.5 or so? (THe current MAF is adjusting the mixture, but have not check ohms)
3. What sort of O2 should I see at WOT? 12.5 or so? Like I said seeing 14.5 or so and car is a bit flat at high RPM when fully accelerating

I know, old post, but I think I just bought a set of these chips for my 86.5. I can feel that some power was left on the floor without knock sensors, but it will be interesting to try these chips and see what it does to the little shark....

Thanks PorKen for building these, should be fun.

And you do know that you will also need an '87 FPR to increase the fule pressure, right?

Make sure you engine is running 100% before installing and you will like the end results

Yeah, I saw that. I wonder if you can depressurize the fuel rail by doing the trick of shutting down the fuel pump to let the engine run out of fuel. Better than a nice squirt of annoying when pulling the regulator (had to do both of them on the 944S awhile back) but a misfire could be bad.

I'm not putting a crossover pipe or dropping the stock fan (that roar is worth a couple of HP). But wondering: Can one run the stock chips with a higher pressure FPR, or will that drive the engine crazy?

Also where's the best place to get the FPR, looks like a $400 part overall. Not the end of the world, but mildly annoying (about as much as my bag of grommets. Nice grommets)

I'm sure this will help the gas mileage as well :-)

Thanks!
C

Yes pull the FP fuse (#42) and start car, will still haves some fuel come out but not as much.
Do all at the same time, don't mix stock FP w/ chip mods as it will effect the mixture.

If you haven't done so replace all the under hood fuel lines, you can try to get a used FPR from 928 international, if they have any.
Have fun,

Dave K
