Yes, the original short block is bagged/oiled, and in my garage.
If we are talking heads and intake going with it, yes, the scope of the project just got huge. I would think the block would be sufficient, unless there was a plan on how to build up the old engine with some newer parts. transmission? the original doors? I think the original hatch was sold off a long time ago with the interior (seats) and some other nick nacks like headlights, etc.

so far, i have the car stripped off all the damaged stuff, and coincidentally enough, the two fenders that were smashed were not original, but the nose was, and it is not in too bad of shape, but has a few tears on the impact side.

We have a few weeks to decide what we want to do, before I start doing some sort of transfer of the "stuff " from the holbert car.

To bad we cant get some type of sponsor ship or a spot on the Pimp your ride show. wouldnt that be something to see the holbert car saved by a reality show! I could see it now. they grab the car, tube frame the front clip and return it with widened front end, new suspension , and the CF intake ready to race! oh, then I wake up . ha ha.

For those that want to help Mark get into another raceable car, the project scope just got bigger. If the Holbert car goes intact to Brumos for restoration for their collection, the new race car project will be pretty much a build rather than a part transfer, except for the engine of course.

I think it's a better candidate for Chop. Cut. Rebuild.

My guess is that any Brumos 'restoration' would take it to as-raced-by-holbert salt flats condition, and would not have the modern race and engine mods you have added. They want it to restore for their museum, not to give it back to you to race again. Maybe they would have mirrors and wipers, maybe not. Depends on where in the video they want to freeze-frame.

I already offered to restore it, I only need Mark to give me a price for the chassis
I have a complete running 87, and a complete non-running 87 as donors

I vote for "Overhaulin"

They steal the car. You act distraught. They suprise you with a fully built racecar with one off wheels... done...

It might be interesting for someone to restore it to original condition and do a commemerative 25th anneversary re-enactment of the record-setting pass at the salt flats. Would make a great conclusion to a documentary film about the car's history and restoration.

This sounds very interesting......but I would imagine they would just buy the car with the original engine from MK and restore it back to speed record status.......then MK keeps the stroker and uses the $$$ to build his next 928 racer

This would be great, doesn't matter if they can't get to it for years.

Roger,

Who's your buddy here in Dallas doing the 928 Documentary? You know, the guy that had you dress up in the white Jacket and have you talk about the TBWP job, while a drunken Brad Webster heckled him from off camera??!!

Maybe this guy can do the documentary on the restoration.

The big question is what should it be restored to - Holbert or Kibort era?

Or maybe Holbort or Kibert?

It'd be cool if they restored it just like the salt flat car, white door jams from being repainted red before the run, lowered, no outside mirrors, etc.

This is the best solution. I'd be willing to donate to this cause as well, as Rixter would restore the car to excellent specifiations and originality.

The historic prominence of the Holbert car makes it deserved to be in a museum for certain. I think it needs to be in the factory museum not only due to the car's record setting run, but also because of the importance to Porsche of the man that was driving it.(sorry Mark, I'm talkin about Holbert here ) I'm sure Brumos would want it just as it was on the salt flats, with or without the side mirrors.

Almost all of the cars & memorabilia in the Brumos private museum have a connection to Brumos's history, including the famous drivers of their cars, & their owners. The IMSA medic 928 is one of a handful of cars that I can think of that are not directly connected to the Brumos history.

I do think that their interest in the Holbert car would be enhanced due to the current two 928s they have displayed not having the importance of this car. The white '78 I believe was a customer's car that was a pristine example. The IMSA car is displayed just as it was on the track, with all markings & blue lights on top & equipment.

I do wonder if they'd want two red '87-'88 S4s in the limited room they have available. Although they do drive & show their cars on a regular basis, the museum is pretty much full, they'd have to move something off the display floor to show something else.
