With the current price of running or almost-running S4's, surely a deal can be struck to furnish Mark with the needed pieces of a manual car and keep the holbert car with matching numbers? (i.e. original heads/bottom end/transmission/chassis).
Just need to find a cheapish non-running early 87 5spd with LSD - sell the squirter block, and swap rest to Mark in exchange for Holbert car. (88/89 manuals would also work - just figure squirter block would allow more extraction of value from the bit that Mark already has due to his stroker block)
Weren't a few individuals in our community interested in taking it on as a restoration? I do see a community effort as being rewarding, but also being a lot of work to coordinate, plus someone has to have space.
edit: What final drive ratio does the holbert transmission have? I forgot some US S4's have 2.20 (my 87 and 89 are both 2.64). US 89 S4 has 2.64 I think?

Ah..."Enough of the car must remain to make any restoration valid " that line has been blured a lot when Hemi Cudas et all got so valuable . After all the 928 tub weighs maybe 500 lbs that is less than 20 % of the car !

I think the original car had both fenders replace as well as one rear quarter panel. If you noticed, the car had no side parking lights front or rear, so they took stock rear quarters and welded them on but the job was done so well , you cant even see where they did it. hood and trim are original, along with the nearly destroyed front bumper cover. doors are in storage, and have all the interior on them, with glass. no original decklid. as Jim mentioned, it really depends on who is doing the restoring, and their goals, how much of the car needs to be original. Id like to cut the roof off, take the engine and brains and call it the holbert car as it could have the front bumper, rear bumper (and I think the rear bumper might not be original like the front one is anyway, because no red paint under the white paint, from the original red paint job for the speed run in 1986).
Its a big job, i would think at this point, someone would want to do it by building up an entire new car from a bare tub, that needs a TON of tough love right now. (unfortunately) .
And by the way, I was just as likely to have this kid of accident as anyone would be driving on the street. It wasnt in the act of racing it was drivnig around a fool , that just so happened to be on the track, that couldnt keep his very slow car under him. Ive had several scares on city streets. All it takes is someone pulling out in front of you. It was a fluke of bad luck. Heartbreaking!![Frown](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)

PS, the car has the stock 2.2:1 rear end with a LSD I put in so we really dont even know if this is the original transmission.

I thought the video of the Bonneville record showed a spare transaxle and we know it no longer has the custom brain with external port for fast chip changes....the original Euro tub would not have had rear sidemarkers.

Well if it gets stripped, he could cut up the leftover chasis into small bits and sell it to the 928 crowd. This way everyone could own a piece of history. Sort of what they do now with old NASCAR cars. At least it's a better alternative than to send it to the scrapyard for a meltdown.

The car didnt have side markers, but when it had its little accidents during its life, it looked like it got 2 new front fenders, and one rear quarter. only one original quarter is left, without the side marker. they filled the side marker holes with bondo and painted it. white, as that damage obviosly happened after the speed run. So, no euro marker either. It also had some weird little dimple in the rear view mirror (DR side) and a little dimple at the base of the front fender , in front of the driver door. (along with the ceiling hole for the roof emergency lights)

Hmm.. left field guess, but my money's on Dwayne. ![ducking](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/icon107.gif)
I reckon he's gonna trade an 87 5-speed with burgundy interior that needs engine work, that he's recently seen.![ooops](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/icon501.gif)

A little surprised that no official announcement has yet been made and it's really not my place to do so.
But since this thread has run it's course, I will close this one down in anticipation for a new Holbert/Kibort 928 announcement thread and then Holbert/Kibort 928 official restoration thread(s).
Cheers!
