Possible Holbert 928 restoration by Brumos! Update: No go!

For these reasons, somebody like Rixter is the perfect solution to get and restore this important car. He'll do the job, and Brumos can acquire sometime in the future when Rixter is ready to part with it.

I contacted Brumos about this situation initially since when I had interviewed Mr. Snodgrass years ago, the head of Brumos for years and now deceased, on how they got Porsche to give them a 928 in 1984 to run in the 24 Hours of Daytona, Mr. Snodgrass mentioned that they had the Holbert Land Speed record car. I wanted to confirm if, by a fluke, they actually did have the car and the one Mark Kibort has was not the right one. My conversation yesterday confirmed they do not have the 928 and that Mark Kibort's car is quite probably the Holbert Land Speed Record car.
Then during this conversation I asked if they would be interested in resurrecting the 928 and the rest is what I posted on this thread initially. It will take a few days to get their decision.
Having Brumos, or Porsche, reclaim this very important and historic 928 would be incredible. The history that it had with Holbert and now with Mark Kibort would make for a very interesting story. Brumos or Porsche also have the resources to do such a restoration to a high standard and personally, I would hope it would be returned to the Land Speed Record standard, if possible using the same chassis and other bits Mark Kibort still has from the car.
But the bottom line and one that cannot be forgotten is that this is still Mark Kibort's 928. It is Mr. Kibort's decision alone on what he wants to have happen to this 928.
Cheers,

Constantine, thanks for taking the initiative and putting the wheels in motion for this. If they don't want it or can't do it for some reason at least no one will ever wonder 'What if?...'. We'll know for sure that at least if the official Porsche museum wasn't offered a shot at it, at least the next best possible solution was tried.
If they choose not to, then I think Rixter would be the next best option but whoever it is, I think everyone who cares what happens to this car should kick in to help buy it from Mark so he's not 'donating' a part of history and then trying to scrape together a replacement out of his own pocket. I think he was very fortunate to have found it in the first place, but he was also wise enough to recognize it for what it was and used it as it should have been used over the time he's had it.
No matter what the outcome, I hope it does get restored and it looks like this is now even more of a possibility.

I don't think anyone is suggesting Mark donate the car. He is entitled to a fair price for it from whatever source he ultimately decides to sell it to. You are correct Constantine - it is Mark's car to decide what to do with. From the various threads, it appears as though he is leaning heavily to selling it to a source that would restore it. So I think that is the main assumption in the direction of this thread.

I wonder if it would make a difference to Brumos' decision if they knew that almost every necessary part to restore the car (front fenders, for example) could be donated by a group of 928 fanatics...

Hi Wally,
In truth, something like that was floated out in the conversation with Brumos. I took a leap of faith after reading all the banter about this topic that this would be supported by many.
We'll see what happens!
Kind regards,

If Brumos did do this I think it would be really cool if we planned the big 928 OC event at their facility to see the cars introduction into their museum.

Mark Kibort:
Why not take Mark Anderson's very kind offer, have the race car restored in his chassis, and let Brumos potentially restore the Holbert car. Remember though that the engine in the Holbert car, is unique and probably should be preserved also. And I recall the LH was unique, but is it now in the possession of Mark A?

OK this seems a little weird? A fair price for a destroyed car .... when it's being replaced with a free unit from Mark Anderson ... or do I misunderstand, is Mr Anderson asking for money?

As did I also.It would be an honor to help bring this car back.If they pass maybe a bunch of us East coasters can get together for the cause.Like I told Mark,I have the space, lifts, and tools and plenty of enthusiasm.

I have even been batting around the crazy wild thoughts in my head of getting the 928OC to buy and restore the Holbert 928. Just think, it could be trailered to each event and time could be dedicated at each progressive event for the members doing hands on parts of the restoration until it is finally finished and unveiled at an OCIC!!
Beyond that seeing it restored by Brumos, or 928 International, or a "Conservation Coalition" of people like Wally, Jim Baily, Dr Bob, Bill Ball etc., or even myself (I would love to restore it), or one of many other lifelong 928 Enthusiasts. I do remember very well I was pissed (at myself) for missing it when Mark A. had it, I would have bought it in a heartbeat and restored it to Speed Record configuaration. Unfortunately I didn't hear about it until the day after Mark K bought it GRRRRR!!!!.
BUT, I still feel Mark K has done the car justice big time, even more than if it had just been restored and sat collecting dust, it got to LIVE, RUN HARD, and RUN PROUD!!.
In the end just as Constantine says, it is Mark's 928 and it is up to him what happens to it now.... Mmmm, Donating it to a Non-Profit Organization like the 928OC is tax deductible, right??? :-) Mark could get a "stated value" tax deduction, I know a bunch of 928 experts that would verify the high value of such a tax deduction :-)

the most important thing is for the car to be restored/preserved for the 928 community as a whole
ALL of us have a vested interest in this car, if just for the fact that we drive these great cars
I for one, think Brumos would do a great job of restoring it... but what happens then? does it sit in their showroom for the next 20yrs only to be seen by those who visit them? I do believe DR is onto something when he mentions the car traveling around.. most of us have never personally seen the car up close, and may never have the opportunity if it goes to someone outside of "our circle", ie a Brumos or private collector like Ingram who keeps it to themselves only to be shown when they feel it's appropriate
but as has been mentioned numerous times, it is Mark's car and he and he alone will make the final decision
I'm glad that I don't have to make that decision

Wise words! It would be perfect if it could somehow get in the hands of some non-profit organization dedicated to 928s. Currently there is really only one to my knowledge, the 928OC, BUT as I mentioned a "928 Conservation Consortium" made up of 928 Enthusuiasts could easily be created for this purpose. However the 928OC is already up and running and has lots of resources (all the members) to pull off the level of restoration the Holbert 928 deserves. You and I and many others could also do this restoration by ourselves, but in the end it is still in the hands of an individual instead of a group of 928 Enthusiasts.
Either way as long as it gets the chance to come back to it's glory and preserved it doesn't matter who does it as long as they continue to take care of it in the manner it deserves AND can offer access of it to all 928 Enthusiasts when appropriate.
I agree with you about Marks' impending decision, I wouldn't want to be in his shoes... on the other hand IF I did have it it would be a no brainer.. I would restore it and take it to every 928 Event I could!!!!!
