Jim,

Which route from Albuquerque are you taking? Lubbock, Tx is where Bill and I were thinking about cutting over

Is there any consensus on where to stay in Albuquerque?

Departure in 12 days! Yikes!!

Cheers

Post cell phone numbers? I'm heading to Austin before Arlington to visit some friends there. Nice to have phone numbers just in case help is needed, or a meetup could be arranged.

We have a slightly revised plan and route. We want to be in Arlington Thurs.nite, but cant leave until weds. nite. Sooooo we are gunna roll out of Page,AZ. about 2am Thurs. morning and head for Route 40. Haul *** east on 40 until Amarillo,TX. Then SouthEast on Rt 287 thru Wichita Falls to Arlington. Its not the most scenic Route but are time is limited. It will take off about 100 miles off our previous route. Now its just under 1100 miles. For those in Albu. wanting to hook up for the ride, we should be rolling thru there about 8am. Hope to get to Arlington around Dinner time.

Louie, which route are you taking to Austin? I love that town, I wish I still had friends out there to stay with!

Hi Darien,
Right now, I'm planning to go wherever Mapquest tells me. You can check the route from The Dalles, Oregon to Elgin, TX. Elgin is East of Austin. The recommended fastest route uses few interstates South of Spanish Fork, UT where I take State route 6 from I-15. Then generally Southeastward to Gallup, NM. East on I-40 through ABQ to Santa Rosa. Then on State route 84 Southeast to Farwell at the TX state line and further to Lubbock. Continue on 84 with Lubbock in my rearview mirror to Abeline. Keep on 84 to the vicinity of Austin. Mapquest says 2045 miles and 32hrs 14 min. Thats averaging nearly 65 mph and I don't know if that'll be possible with so much of the route probably 2 lane road clogged with all manner of barely moving roadblocks. It might be better to cut East from Ogden through Wyoming to Cheyenne, then South on I-25 to Denver, East on I-70 to Salina, KS and straight South on I-135/I-35 through OKC, DFW, to Austin. It's a longer distance, but maybe ultimately quicker.

I was planning to leave Monday and get to Elgin Wednesday evening, but maybe I should leave Sunday instead and get to Twin Falls, ID or Ogden, UT for a bit of a jump on it. I think my 1200 mile days are behind me and 6 - 700 miles a day seems enough anymore. Something like summer weather arrived here today with temps in The Dalles of 99. The A/C did quite well so that's a relief. Oil temp got to 225 and water temp to 220 (needle width above top white line) climbing the hill to our house, but cooled right down after going over the top. Probably ok.

Suggestions?

Louie -

Your first option is roughly the route the missus and I will be driving. We'll leave Provo on Monday around 2:00 pm and take off at Spanish Fork on US-6. We plan to arrive in Moab around dinner time, cuz there's a very nice restaurant there I want the wifey to try.

Then we'll forge on and hope to stay in Monticello or perhaps Cortez, CO for the night.

You might consider turning east at Shiprock through Farmington, and taking US 550 at Bloomfield. It's a relatively new road; a 4-lane divided highway with very little traffic, and is a fairly interesting drive. It hooks up with I-25 just north of Albuquerque. Then it's a short shot down I-25 to merge with I-40.

We'll likely stay in Amarillo on Tuesday night, then just take I-27 to Lubbock. The wifey wants to briefly check out Lubbock, since our youngest daughter will shortly be moving there.

Then we'll head down US 84 and in to McKinney, TX to spend Wed night with our other daughter.

It sounds like you may be a few hours ahead of us unless you want to slow down a little! If you want to drive with us, you're more than welcome! Or if you're passing through Provo around noon, give me a call on my cell, and I'll treat you to lunch.

Or if you want my cell phone just to have some potential help coming along behind you if you have problems, I'll shoot you a PM and give you my number.

Thanks for the suggestions. I printed it out to take with me. Sure send PM with your cell number. The more #s the better. I may be ahead a little at Provo.

Those are the ones that fit between the radiator and engine? They are about 12" or 16" x 24" to 28"?

Bigs, I think we'll be a day behind you and considering the same route. The info on us550 is appreciated, thanks!

Moab looks like a good overnight stop for us, do you mind sharing the name of your restaurant there? (PM me if you would rather).
