Default SCCA ITE RACES at Laguna Seca 6-19-09 Video up on YOUTUBE

Probably one of the greatest mix of high performance sports cars ever run in a non pro event.

http://www.sfrscca.org/images/2009/S...une19entry.pdf

ITE is going to be like a mini Speed World Challenge GT event as far as mix and diversity of cars. (as well as some of the cars in performance)
The Group 3 race group will be filled with :
Nascar
SWT cars
Super Unlimited
and the Porsche Pirelli cup GT3 challenge cars.

I was looking through the entry list and thought to myself, "heck, this would be an event I would pay to go see!".

In ITE we have panos and several Vipers, a couple of them, Comp coupes,
turbo NSx, PTG style BMW M3, Griggs Mustang, porsches, Supercharged S2000s, mustangs, vets, lotus, Subaru, caddy. (dont know what CTS this is, but Ill find out), etc

Should be an awesome weekend. Still time to sign up. Lots of porsches are already there, GT3RSs to GT3cup cars.

So, this is on Friday only? I should be able to make it anyway. One of the benefits of being unemployed. Who else can go?

So, you're in Group 3. Qualifying Friday at 2:10, racing Saturday at 11:50 and 2:55, racing Sunday at 12:50.

I'll see if I can raise a crowd for Saturday.

Anderson is coming to watch, or coming to RACE????

Hopefully I'll be at Thunderhill that weekend with NCRC in the widow....assuming everything is done in time...

I think he is trying to put his cup car in the race in Group3 and if he has DOTs for it, he can race with us. Now that would be fun!

Just found out Anderson is coming with his cup car to run in the pirelli cup in our races at Laguna Seca.
Also, 3 of the Pirelli cup cars will be running in ITE with us too. It will be interesting to see how the ole Holbert car stacks up against some factory race GT3 Cup cars, WITHOUT the cheater motor that World challenge uses SpeedGT. (standard cup cars). We also have the WCGT caddy showing up as well as some other interesting cars. should be a very cool race to watch.

I dont have time right now for the full report with pics, but we had a great time.

I got to run almost brand new used hoosiers. you guys know I know laguna and my car better than most, and they are only worth about .25 to .5 seconds over a good set of toyos . the car felt better, fixed all pushing issues, and was very neutral. but this didnt change the lap times all that much. In my book it was a very good improvement.

qualified at 1:37.5 and 1:37.6 in both races. RACE 1 was up to 3rd overall, even ahead of a few Pirelli Cup Porsche GT3s, (but I knew they were going to eventually pick me off ), and then the shift lever broke in half! (Pic coming). I pulled all the stuff off the shifter linkage area and found the issue, pulled the shaft back hard with the clutch in and blipped the throttle, and it went into a gear. YEP, 3rd, that worked, and ran the rest of the race banging off the rev limiter and finished the race in 6th in class, but the 3 guys I really wanted to finish ahead of ( the PTG BMW, 650hp viper who beat me last laguna, and monster camaro) ended up picking me off before the end of the race even though I had a pretty good lead. best lap, 1:37.5. Normally, even with the bigger toyos up front, my race times were in the 1:38.1 range, even though best qualifying was always 1:38.8.

Race 2. same situation at the start, but now we have the Speed WC GT Cadillac next to me. I pass get by him in to the first turn and get into the same spot I was in RACE 1, but the S2000 is ahead and pulling away (500rwhp). the porsches from pirelli cup are now faster, and are ahead, but i have a few laps with the caddy who I block for a lap and then he just blows by on the main straight. I get some distance from the BMW and camaro again and then the brakes start acting funny. the inital stab slows the car and then the pedal goes to the floor and the brakes go away. (scary!) I just yank on the wheel to turn in and downshift like a madman to get the car to slow down to make the turns. I know its going but thinking its overheat or my thin pads causing some issues, I give the main straight one more try. (bad Idea), i go for the brakes and i get an initial bite, and then nothing , but really nothing this time. (only some rear braking, but that doesnt do much of anything. I thinking im heading for the sand and tire wall, but somehow, redline blips and shifts to 3rd and then 2nd and a hard turn, slide down to the apex, slows me down to make the turn barely. Now, I have no brakes at all. I even yanked on the e brake that didnt do anything at all. Now, I should have just come in, but the next few turns show that I can run the track with no brakes as I commonly do this in practice to cool brake off. I was able to safely run around for about 7 laps with no brakes watching a bunch of cars I had gapped pass me before the final lap. finished 6th again, and best lap time 1:37.8 on the 4th lap with still near a half tank.
So, the problem???????????? busted 26year old , original brake line up front. DUH!!!!!! I should have listened to you guys (Mark A) about that!

Ill let mark chime about his issues with the cup car. I will say, when he was running in the races, he was awesome and was way up front with the cup car. But , when it was running strong!

pics to come and some good video incar, rear view and trackside.

Edit: Oh yeah, my best time with no brakes was a 1:48
Also, that was the dumbest thing Ive ever done in racing staying out there with no brakes. Should have just brought the car in instead of staying out.

mk
