That is perfectly normal side effect of hardening process. All 928 cranks have signs like those AFAIK.

That is a bummer....

So the GT is getting the GT motor and the stroker is going into the GTS???

When will you have two running sharks?

Looks like there isn't much to save from the bottom end. Some of the rods and pistons maybe..........crank and block are boat anchors.

The GT engine looks brand new............whats the secret?

Any way of using steel sleeves in the GTS block?

I guess GB can definitely say if the crank and block are goners.

That GT motor looks awesome. Did you rebuild it, or just freshen the cosmetics?

Rob, looks like that #2 journal is just worn on one side. Might be able to fit a mismatch pair of bearing shellls to make up the dirfference. Undersized shell on the side where the wear is greatest, of course.

Just got my new laptop computer online after the last one fragged. Catching up on e-mails and Rennlist. Tried to do the iPhone but the screen and typing are too small for regular use.

I'll be interested in Greg's assessment- not sure whether it's even worth cutting the con rod on #2 to get it out.

Afshin- The GT engine's going back into the GT, the stroker's going in the GTS.

All I did to the GT motor was change the rod bearings in 2 and 6, R&R one of the split hoses under the intake, and I had Greg tap the pan for a GTS baffle for me.

As far as the cosmetics go, since it was sitting on an engine stand I just pulled every single nut and bolt off the engine and got them plated. Everything else was a combination of pressure washing, brake cleaner, and elbow grease. My fingers are so sore today- dunno how the pros do this day in and day out. But the GT is now about as clean as it can get, I just need to reinstall the clutch hydraulics and then the motor can go back in. Who knows, I might even drive it then.

The wife is happy too, she got her garage space back:

Or coffee table, or BBQ. I really like the BBQ idea for a ruined block in So. Cal. Not many wives would allow the coffee table into the house anyway.

Did you powder coat the intake and cam/valve covers? So the question is this..... if one has an engine in need of general PM (all the goodies) is it easier/make sense to pull the engine and do what Rob has done to his GT, or is it best/easier to leave it in the car and disassemble, do PM stuff and paint/powder coat/plate?

Sorry Rob don't mean to hijack your thread but man! you posted the GT engine pics. Looks just awesome!

Dan-

Check your PM's.

The intake and VC's were PC'ed 2 years ago- there's a great shop in Orange, CA. You could get to most of what I did with the engine in situ (much of what got plated you won't even see in the car) but with the engine out, EVERYTHING is clean....

Not to hijack Robs thread but I did the intake R&R 2 years ago and this past winter did the VC, OP, WP and air conditioning projects. Prior to these over the last 8 years there was the MAF, the fuel lines, the Pkensioner, MMs etc etc etc.

If I was to do all these projects again I'd pull the engine..........easy said now I've the confidence.

Look at Robs previous thread with the engine bay cleaned up with the engine out. With the GT engine as clean as it is the car will be a showpiece for quite sometime.

Yep.. I'd say the crank and block are done too. The GT engine looks UBER fantastic. Who did your powder coating? How much did you pay? I've been searching around getting quotes for my intake, valve covers, and oil filler neck. The best price so far is $225/$325 with clear.
